After one of the most successful juvenile seasons in horse racing history, Pinatubo will be carrying the weight of great expectations over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile racecourse — because the word in the industry is that the deceptively laid-back bay colt could prove to be the greatest racehorse the world has ever seen. – Arab News

PINATUBO, the sensational Irish-bred, British-based  2-year-old of 2019, meets 14 other 3-year-olds in the first big classic race of the English season June 6, the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

And the Godolphin-owned colt, trained by Charlie Appleby, is already drawing comparisons to Frankel; some say he could be better. The colt, a course record-setter in 2019 when 6 for 6, was allotted an official rating of 128 in the European Classifications, making him the highest-rated juvenile for a quarter of a century.

Named for an active volcano in the Philippines, Pinatubo is one of those racehorses who does not attract much attention in the mornings. The colt is on the small side and he goes about his business in training without a ton of spark (trainer Charlie Appleby says the colt does not have a whole lot of ‘swagger’) but when he gets on the track, look out.

Pinatubo is a son of Shamardal from the listed stakes winner Lava Flow by Dalakhani.

His competition Saturday includes another undefeated colt, KENZAI WARRIOR, plus the Aidan O’Brien-trained ARIZONA, colts also held in high regard.
