What a return to the races it was for APPREHEND, the six-year-old gelding owned by Peter Redekop who rolled to a 3 3/4 length win in the $75,000 Century Mile Handicap in Nisku, Alberta on July 12.
Apprehend, trained by Barbara Heads, carried 125 pounds and sat off the pace set by Ticket to the Top, who took the field through fractions of 23.05 seconds for the opening quarter, 45.83 for half a mile and 1:10.03 for six furlongs. Apprehend advanced, moved to the fore, and powered clear under Amadeo Perez. He ran the 1 mile and 70 yards in 1:39.83, bettering At Attention’s 1:40.22 track record set a few races earlier.
Apprehend earned an 81 Beyer Speed Figure, according to Daily Racing Form.
Apprehend invaded Alberta from British Columbia, where he was the 2024 Older Horse of the Year at Hastings Race Course. He was winning his fifth straight race in the Century Mile, which was his first outing since October.
Peter Redekop owns Apprehend, a son of Arrogate – Hero’s Amor by Street Hero who has now won eight of 15 starts for earnings of $317,062.
