Vancouver, B.C. – As farewells go, Monashee did it up right. With jockey Dave Wilson enjoying the trip – again – the 5-year-old gray mare won her 11th consecutive stakes race to capture the $125,000 Ballerina Breeders’ Cup before a throng of appreciative fans at Hastings Racecourse on October 13th.

“I just had to sit on her,” Wilson said in the winner’s circle. “It’s going to be sad to see her go and I can only hope the best for her the rest of the year.”

Monashee owner Ole Nielsen, speaking on behalf of Canmor Farms, confirmed that the next stop will be the $175,000 Maple Leaf Stakes at Woodbine on Nov. 10 before heading to Southern California. “I’d like to thank the Hastings fans for all their support,” Nielsen said. “It’s been a great ride and I hope the fans enjoyed it as much as we have.”

Trainer Tracy McCarthy added: “You’re always looking for a great horse and Monashee has been one of the greatest. Hopefully we can find another that’s as good as her.”

Monashee dominated the four-horse field by breaking sharply and drawing clear, winning by a comfortable 1 ¼-lengths with Lady Raj finishing second and Slewpast third. With Monashee bet down to 1-9 as expected, the winning time over the 1 1/8 miles was 1:50.64.
