In what is one of the most significant additions to the Canadian stallion ranks in years, the exciting, young stallion Sergei Prokofiev, Europe’s Champion first-year sire last season, will stand in Ontario for the 2026 breeding season, courtesy of David Anderson of Anderson Farms.

A brilliantly quick Group stakes winning son of Scat Daddy out of the Tapit mare Orchard Beach, Sergei Prokofiev has had a remarkable 53 winners from his first two crops including Group 1 winner Arizona Blaze, among others.

The 9-year-old stallion will stand at Ballycroy Bloodstock in Loretto, ON for a $10,000 (Can) fee.

“We haven’t seen a proven stallion of his stature come to Canada in decades,” said Anderson, who sold Sergei Prokofiev for $1.1 million as a yearling to Coolmore. “He’s not only a proven sire of top runners but he is commercial. He had full books of 150 mares each year and his 2025 book was arguably his best.”

Sergei Prokofiev was trained by Aidan O’Brien and as a 2-year-old he won the Cornwallis Stakes (G3) at Newmarket, “in which he displayed an abundance of speed and an irresistible turn of foot to sweep from last to first in a matter of strides”, reported James Thomas of the Racing Post.

His other significant wins include the Listed Rochestown Stakes and the Listed Cork Stakes. He also finished third in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.

O’Brien summed up his talented trainee by saying, “Sergei Prokofiev is a very fast horse, as fast a horse as I’ve ever had.”

Sergei Prokofiev entered stud at Whitsbury Manor Stud in England and his first crop race in 2024 and featured 23 individual winners of 29 races. From that first crop, Arizona Blaze finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) at Del Mar.

In 2025, Sergei Prokofiev sired Harry’s Half Million by Goffs Stakes winner Song of the Clyde and Mhally, third in the Group 3 Saudi Derby.

“He’s not only a proven sire of runners but he is commercial,” said Anderson. “He has had $200,000 sale yearlings. In a couple of years he will have horses racing on several continents and become a truly international stallion and he is only 9 years old.”

Anderson said the Ontario government’s support of the racing and breeding industry in Ontario is another reason he made the move to purchase Sergei Prokofiev.

“I think there is a good future for Ontario breeding and this is the kind of horse that can make that happen. He is arguably the second best son of Scat Daddy at stud, next to Justify.”

Offspring of Sergei Prokofiev have excelled on turf and synthetic surfaces and have been Group-placed on dirt. “He is out of a Tapit mare who is out of an Unbridled’s Song mare who is out of a Danzig mare. The pedigree is full of broodmare sires with an added rare combination of crazy speed with stamina.”

Ballycroy Bloodstock is operated by Michaela Kemp and parents Steve and Kathleen. “They are tremendous people and they have a first class facility that is close to a lot of Ontario’s breeders.”

Anderson believes Sergei Prokofiev will complement the province’s current leading sires.

“I don’t see him necessarily as competition to the Ontario stallions. He’s an alternative to sending your mare to Kentucky to breed. Given the costs today of vanning, vets, boarding and the exchange rate, this will be a cost saving option for local breeders.

Ontario breeders often complain and say we have no good stallions in Ontario. Well here you go. Where are you going to find a stallion in the US with his value of the equivalent of $7,000 USD. I quietly offered some shares to small group of top breeders and the response was overwhelming. He literally sold out overnight.”
