Albaugh Family’s 2-year-old (soon to be 3) COME ON GERRY led from start to finish to win his maiden at Gulfstream Park on Friday and jump into the picture for the coming year’s Queen’s Plate.
Bred in Ontario by David Anderson’s Anderson Farms, the $335,000 yearling purchase was making his 2nd start in the 1 1/16 mile dirt race and won by 2 1/4 lengths in 1:44.12 for a 77 Beyer Speed Figure according to Daily Racing Form.

Come on Gerry is by Elusive Quality from the mare Halo’s Verse (by Unbridled’s Song) and is the 4th foal of the mare. He is a half brother to grass stakes winner Inflexibility, who won the Wonder Where Stakes and Carotene Stakes.

In just a few days, it will be the birthday for all Northern Hemisphere racehorses and our Canadian 2-year-olds turn 3 and dreams of the Plate will heighten for owners, trainers and breeders.

Of course, it is still early to think about who are the best 10 Canadian-breds for this year’s Plate but we got to see quite a few on the track in 2018 who are the current top contenders.

Those include AMI’S FLATTER, winner of the Cup & Saucer and Coronation Futurity, the two biggest races for Canadian-bred juveniles in the year. The son of Flatter is a homebred for Ivan Dalos who seeks his first Plate win.
Josie Carroll trains the colt and Carroll, a 2-time Plate winning trainer also has a nice prospect in HE’S A MACHO MAN, who won his career debut near the end of the Woodbine season with a 62 Beyer Figure, taking a 1 1/16 mile maiden allowance in 1:46.20 with an exciting stretch rally. He’s a Macho Man was bred by Paul Buttigieg and was a $47,000 CTHS Ontario yearling purchase in 2017 by John, Joey and Mark DiScola.

The filly BOLD SCRIPT posted an 83 Beyer Figure when she won the Princess Elizabeth Stakes for owner/breeder Chiefswood Stable and was one of the fastest 2-year-olds of the year. She is by Speightstown from Original Scrip and is trained by Stuart Simon.
TIZ BREATHTAKING, one of the leaders of the 2yo filly division in Canada, was a multiple stakes winner before she went on the sidelines, She is owned by Bill Graham

Plenty of other fillies posted Beyer Figures in the mid to high 70s including ARTILENA (Artie Schiller), a stakes winner for George Ledson, Kingfield, Anderson Farms and Braconcrest Farm and WESTERN CURL, a Chiefswood filly by Curlin.

HASTLAVISTABABY, bought for just $8,000 from Charles Hayden by Joey Gee Thoroughbreds, was 2nd to Artilena in the Ontario Lassie after being purchased in part by Gary Barber and Team Valor. She is a daughter of Drosselmeyer, a Belmont Stakes winner.
SOUCIOLOGIST posted a 69 Beyer Figure when she won her maiden for Bill and Al Ulwelling late in the seaosn and this filly is by Gemologist and is trained by Kevin Attard. She was bred by Bill Graham.

Conrad Stables’ MUSKOKA WONDER (Into Mischief), trained by Mark Casse, won the Clarendon Stakes and FEDERAL LAW, 2nd to Avie’s Flatter in the Coronation Futurity, was an exciting arrival for Qatar Racing. He is a Scat Daddy gelding bred by the Jim Lawson family’s Jim Dandy Stable.

TONE BROKE, a son of Broken Vow – Mendocino Beano, was an allowance winner at Remington Park for trainer Steve Asmussen and L and N racing and he was bred by Sean and Dorothy Fitzhenry.

Ontario sired guys DUN DRUM and MY SILENCER were both nifty stakes winners at 2 this past autumn. The former is by Silent Name (Jpn) and races for breeder Heste Sport and trainer Bill Tharrenos while the latter is a Bold n’ Flashy guy trained by Ian Black for Janet Black and Joan Addison and Barbara Brown.

And MOON SWINGS and TRIPWIRE were stakes placed Canadian breds for Zilli Racing and Ken and Sarah Ramsay, respectively.
