The first Canadian yearling sale of 2024 will be the Manitoba CTHS auction on August 22 at the Red River Exhibition Grounds in Winnipeg. Viewing of yearlings begins on August 21 at 10 a.m.
The Manitoba sale is on a four-year streak of increased yearling average. In 2023, the sale reported 16 yearlings selling of 38 offered for $183,500 at an average price of $11,469. During the 2022 edition, 17 of the 32 yearlings through the ring were sold for a gross of $170,150, averaging $10,008 per yearling.
Stallions Nonios and Speculating, sire of the three top-priced yearlings in 2023, are well represented in the 31-yearling catalogue. Speculating, a well-bred son of Medaglia D’Oro, has his first crop of two-year-olds set to race this year (one is entered at Assiniboia Downs on Tuesday of this week). Among his yearlings in the sale is Bring the Bourbon, a filly from stakes-winning mare Danger Pay, the dam of Canadian champion Escape Clause.
Other leading Canadian stallions with yearlings in the sale include Ami’s Holiday and Fed Biz.
