Grade 2 placed ABARTA, a son of North America’s leading sire Into Mischief, will stand the 2022 breeding season at Thomas Kniznet’s Tara Horse Farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON. His fee will be $3,000 (Can.).
Abarta is a 4-year-old bay colt who raced just three times, all as a 2-year-old in 2020 for Donegal Racing and Newtown Anner Stud and trainer Brad Cox. The colt won his career debut at Ellis Park at 1 1/16 miles on turf and then rallied to be second in the Grade 2 Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland.
Abarta had a troubled trip in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland won by Fire at Will. Abarta did not race again after that outing.
A $200,000 yearling purchase at the Keeneland September auction, Abarta is by the remarkable Into Mischief, a son of Harlan’s Holiday with more than 100 black-type winners. Into Mischief is also the sire of successful stallions Practical Joke, Shanghai Bobby, Goldencents and Majesticperfection.
Abarta’s dam, DAME MARIE, by Smart Strike, won four of 18 races and was second in the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Distaff Turf Mile. She earned $241,291. Dame Marie’s dam, CRYSTAL CROSSING, a stakes winner in England, has produced a dozen foals including St. Leger (G1) winner RULE OF LAW.
Crystal Crossing, by Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) winner Royal Academy, is a full sister to Group 3 winner Circle of Gold (Ire).
