The 2022 OBS March Sale wrapped up March 16 with its second of two sessions of Two-Year-Olds in Training. The sale’s highest-priced juvenile sold on Wednesday, a colt by More Than Ready – Broad Spectrum by Indian Charlie, who sold for $1.2 million to KSI.
Two Ontario-breds were pinhooked with success including a colt from the first crop of Collected, winner of the Grade Pacific Classic and over $2.9 million, from the Arch mare Androeah. Bred by Anderson Farms Ontario, Ltd., the colt was originally a $65,000 weanling in 2020, purchased by Machmer Hall, and a $160,000 yearling purchased by SGV Bloodstock. The colt sold for $310,000 at this sale to Westpoint Thoroughbreds.
Josham Farms bred a filly by Good Magic from the unraced mare Decor by Declaration of War who was a $160,000 yearling purchase by DeMeric Sales and then sold at OBS for $360,000 to Lael Stable.
The first session kicked off with a pair of seven-figure colts by OBS March graduate Into Mischief leading the first session.
Hip 257 summoned $1,100,000 from Hideyuki Mori. The bay colt by Into Mischief is out of the Not For Love mare Zapara and a half-brother to stakes-placed Basso. He worked a bullet 9 4/5 and is consigned to the sale by Eddie Woods as agent.
This colt stems from the female family of Canadian Triple Crown winner Izvestia.
Hip 277, another bay colt by Into Mischief, is out of multiple Grade 1 winner Artemis Agrotera, by Roman Ruler. He had a 10 1/5 work and goes to the partnership of Spendthrift, BSW/Crow Colts Group, Broman’s from the Sequel Bloodstock consignment as agent for Chester & Mary Broman.

- Hip 318, a bay More Than Ready colt, sold for $1,200,000 as the second hip in the ring today. He goes to K S I from the Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent consignment. The colt is out of the Indian Charlie mare, Broad Spectrum, making him a half-brother to stakes placed Broad Approval. He went 9 4/5 in his furlong breeze.
- Hip 257 summoned $1,100,000 from Hideyuki Mori. The bay colt by Into Mischief is out of the Not For Love mare Zapara and a half-brother to stakes-placed Basso. He worked a bullet furlong in 9 4/5 and is consigned to the sale by Eddie Woods as agent.

- Hip 532, a bay American Pharoah filly, sold to Donato Lanni as agent for $1,000,000. From the Top Line Sales, Agent consignment, she is out of the Forest Camp mare Just Parker who is a half-sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Qahira. The filly went 10-flat in her eighth-mile breeze
Total figures for the OBS March sale:
- 375 head sold compared to 325 last year
- Gross sales of $49,656,000 compared to $37,970,000 in 2021 resulted in a 30.7% increase year-to-year.
- Average price rose to $132,416 from $116,831 for a 13.3% rise compared to the 2021 sale.
- A median price of $75,000 rose 25% over last years’ median of $60,000.
- Overall buyback rate was down to 12.8% compared to 16.4% in 2021.
