Stakes report from Mike Heads at Hastings, July 3, 2022.
Summer ended abruptly at Hastings as the cooler air and grey skies of spring returned. Sporadic rain was only light and the track remained fast throughout.
Race 5 — The Supernaturel Stakes
The fifth race of the day was the first stakes, the $50,000 Supernaturel going a mile and a sixteenth, and after an adventurous trip John Anderson’s U DID IT (Tiede – Architecture by Dixie Chatter) got up in deep stretch to secure the win. The favoured U DID IT ($4.20) elected to take back early and settle but she had other ideas and was tough to handle through the first half-mile then was given a break when the saddle slipped on SILK STILETTOS, allowing Antonio Reyes to have dead aim on the speed. She outran BELCARRA PARK to the wire for trainer Edgar Mendoza in a good 1:45.76. George Gilbert’s BELCARRA PARK ran a much improved race without the blinkers and settled nicely on a comfortable pace (23.98, 47.53 and 1:12.76) then jumped the dirt tracks on the backside where the starting gate sits, losing her action. Amadeo Perez quickly slapped her on the shoulder to get her back in stride but the mishap had cost her the one-length break that she had and she couldn’t stay with the winner through the closing stages, but ran a good second. The Sapphire Stables SHAMRA settled a little closer today and closed up in the stretch, just missing second and wound up third.
U Did It, out of multiple stakes winner Architecture, was bought for just $1,500 (CAD) at the 2020 BC CTHS Mixed Sale.
Race 6 — The Chris Loseth Handicap Stakes
The sixth was the $50,000 Chris Loseth Stakes, which was taken by Kim Peacock and Lance Giesbrecht’s REGAL RIOT ($11.40) giving him two stakes wins in a row. The son of Jersey Town from champion mare Regal Red (On Target) sat a perfect trip under Efrain Hernandez off of a very slow early cadence, then started to inch away heading for home and safely held the advantage to the wire in a good 1:44.56 for veteran conditioner Robbie Anderson. The horse was bred by his wife Suzanne Anderson in Westwold, B.C., which is just east of Kamloops. Gord Christoff’s GUNFIGHTER was at a distinct disadvantage with the shape of the race and showed his class by making the race interesting as he rallied from five lengths back to make it exciting in the lane but had to settle for second for trainer John Snow. Dave and Sylvea Gregory’s SOARINGFORTHESUN led the field early through easy splits but couldn’t quite stay with the top two, ending up a clear third.
Regal Riot is the fifth foal to race of Regal Red who won 7 of 10 races and 6 stakes in BC. Regal Riot’s siblings include stakes winners Slice of Red and Wilo Kat.
