Trainer Simon Crisford called an audible with Group 2 winner ALGIERS (Ire) on the weekend when he scratched the six-year-old from the Grade 2 Woodward Stakes at Aqueduct and re-routed him to Woodbine.
Owned by Rabbah Bloodstock, Algiers (Shamardal) will compete in the Grade 2 Durham Cup Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on Tapeta on October 7. As the gelding was not originally nominated to Saturday’s race, he will have to be supplemented.
Daily Racing Form‘s David Grening reported on Sunday that Crisford wasn’t sure Algiers would have liked a drying-out main dirt track at Aqueduct. The long-range plan for Algiers is the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita next month.
Algiers was last seen finishing second in the Dubai World Cup (G1) to Ushba Tesoro. The gelding has seven wins in 21 races and earnings of over $3.02 million.
Saturday’s Durham Cup ushers in another big weekend at Woodbine with the 84th running of the CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL (G1) on Sunday along with the E.P. Taylor Stakes (G1) and Nearctic Stakes.
Next weekend is the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. There is no racing at Woodbine on Monday.
