Keeneland November Sale Update: More Canadian Buyers

The Keeneland November sale wrapped up last week and Canadians were active throughout the sale (see link below for a recap of the first five sessions of the auction).

During the nine-day November Sale held Nov. 8-16, Keeneland sold 2,128 horses through the ring for $176,571,000, a decrease of 15.47% when compared with last year, where 2,091 horses sold through the ring brought $208,879,100. Cumulative average price of $82,975 was down 16.94% from $99,894 recorded in 2022. Cumulative median price decreased 20% from $40,000 to $32,000.

The RNA rate of 21.99% dipped 1.52% from last year’s 22.04%.

From the final four sessions, some of the Canadian purchases were:

Tall Oaks Farm of Colleen Dalos and Ivan Dalos bought a weanling filly by Caravaggio from Uyuni for $17,000.

Shannondoe Farm paid $40,000 for the mare She’s Got Moves, in foal to Early Voting.

Highfield Investment Group purchased a weanling filly by Upstart – Zensational Beauty for $27,00 and the Street Sense mare Classic Colors for $7,000.

Tara Horse Farm paid $12,000 for the mare Evening Wind in foal to Girvin.

Sherry McLean as agent for Paul Buttigieg bought the mare Whataperformance for $9,000 in foal to Independence Hall.

Braconcrest Inc. of Doug Anderson picked up the mare Pharoah’s Belle, by American Pharoah for $25,000 and she is in foal to Game Winner.

Bryan and Carol Anderson from British Columbia bought a Hard Spun mare, She’s Custom Made, for $17,000 and she is in foal to Frosted. The Andersons began the week selling their weanling filly by leading young sire GOOD MAGIC for $80,000.

Zack Cameron bought Dooder, a mare by Flatter in foal to Classic Empire for $5,000.

Nigel Reid from Horseracing BC noted other BC purchasers:

Hastings trainer Rob Maybin was also in Kentucky to sign for a brace of unraced juveniles from the November 17 Horses of Racing Age Sale.

Maybin first went to $17,000 for WESTMINSTER, a gelded 2yo son of leading second-crop sire BOLT D’ORO, before going on to sign the ticket for RHUMBABA, a colt by first-season sire CATALINA CRUISER, when the bidding stopped at $33,000.

Both youngsters are temporarily under the care of Shelley Todd’s Todd Manor farm and will head west at some point prior to spring training.

Local owner/breeder Barry Doud also struck twice this week during the Breeding Stock Sale, buying the 8yo mare SAFE TO PLAY (Justin Phillip) in-foal to CAIRO PRINCE (Pioneer of the Nile) for $17,000, before snaffling up HIP #3327, a weanling colt by first-season sire PRESERVATIONIST (Arch), for $5,000.

Hastings’ loyalists Jim and Anne Alendal also found great value, bagging HIP #2468, a weanling colt by first-season sire GIFT BOX (Twirling Candy) for $5,000 and then HIP #2765, a weanling filly by CLOUD COMPUTING (Maclean’s Music), for $7,000.

Finally, long-time breeder and perennial CTHS Yearling Sale consignor Bruce Whitehouse is heading back to B.C. with Hip #3199 (below), a weanling colt by COLLECTED (City Zip) who was knocked down to Whitewood Farm for $13,000.
