Here are some interesting statistical bits from the Woodbine 2023 Thoroughbred season which ended on Sunday, December 17.
JULIA CAREY led all Woodbine trainers by win percentage (with a minimum 20 starters) at 26 as she won 10 races from her 39 starters. Carey, who surged to the top on the last day of racing when the two-year-old FAIRWAY TO HEAVEN won his maiden, also won the Grade 3 Kennedy Road Stakes with Flag of Honour (AUS).
American trainer Jonathan Thomas won at 25% winning with five of his 20 shippers and Woodbine-based JOE RUSSO also won at 25%.
Owner RANDY BHARAT, in his second year as an owner, won seven races from 22 starts and led all owners with a whopping win percentage of 33. Bharat’s horses are trained by Carlos Grant and one of his top horses was two-time winner Muskoka Summer.
The horses who posted the highest winning Beyer Speed Figures at Woodbine in 2023 (according to Daily Racing Form) were MASTER OF THE SEAS (IRE) and NATIONS PRIDE (IRE) who each posted a 104 in wins in the Woodbine Mile (G1) and Canadian International (G1).
They were followed by TYSON and MOIRA at 101, BORDER TOWN at 100, LUCKY SCORE, 100 and WAR BOMBER, FEV ROVER, TREASON, WOLFIE’S DYNAGHOST and PALAZZI, all with 99.
