RAFAEL HERNANDEZ didn’t take long to win at Aqueduct as he guided 11-to-1 shot Blue Plate Special to victory on Feb. 17 for trainer Randi Persaud. Hernandez won two races at Turfway Park before he moved his tack to New York last weekend.
JOSIE CARROLL sent out Earle Mack’s THE THUNDERER to win a $16,000 maiden claiming race at Turfway Park on the weekend. The five-year-old son of Blame was 4-to-1 and escaped traffic to grab his first win and the first win for Carroll this season.
BILL THARRENOS continued his winning spree at Gulfstream Park on the weekend when THIS DUDE A BREEZE (First Dude) won a one mile turf maiden race on Feb. 17. The Florida-bred was 15-to-1 and was up to win by a head with a 71 Beyer Speed Figure. Tharrenos won three races last week. Yesterday, the trainer’s only starter finished second.
MARTIN DREXLER has seven wins this year with BE LIKE CLINT, who most recently won for $20,000 claiming for owner Bruno Schickedanz. Drexler trainee Mr. Narcisistic was an unlucky second on Sunday. The trainer also claimed two horses that won on the afternoon.
MARK CASSE, who is seeking his 16th Sovereign Award for Outstanding Trainer when the awards are held in April, has 21 wins this year already.
MIGHTY HEART worked a quick 3 furlongs at Turfway Park, his second workout since returning to training, The two-time Horse of the Year is trained by Jonathan Thomas.
STEVEN CHIRCOP has an impressive eight wins this year and his most recent was BRIEF (Quality Road), who won for $5,000 claiming on Feb. 16 for Chircop and co-owner Eric Ross.
Ontario-bred SILENT AND VIOLENT won the last race at Gulfstream on Sunday, a maiden race for $25,000 claiming on the all-weather track. The son of Violence – Silent Star by Silent Name (Jon) ran 1 mile and 70 yards in 1:41.65. The colt won for Ken Ramsey and trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. but was claimed by Ontario owner Carlo D’Amato. Silent and Violent was bred by CEC Stables, LP.
