An Ontario-bred bay colt from the first crop of MCKINZIE (Street Sense) sold for a hefty $750,000 during the first session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales March Two-Year-Old in Training Sale in Florida on March 12. Bred by the late Mike Carroll, who owned and operated Grandview Stables near Fergus, the colt was bought by relatively new owner Bill Childs, who races under CSLR Racing partners with his son Alex. Bob Baffert will train.
The colt worked one furlong in a sharp 9 4/5 seconds. The colt was sold last fall by Cara Bloodstock’s Bernard McCormack, as agent, for $205,000 to Starline Thoroughbreds. He was sold on Tuesday by Wavertree Stables, Ciaran Dunne, agent.
McKinzie won the Whitney Stakes (G1) and Malibu Stakes (FG1) among other grade 1s and earned over $3.7 million.
The Ontario-bred colt is from the mare Breech Inlet, a daughter of Holy Bull. Breech Inlet produced Wonder Where and Ontario Damsel Stakes winner Merveilleux, who was Grade 2 placed and earned over $564,000 for owners Al and Bill Ulwelling.
The Ulwellings not only have Merveilleux as a broodmare, but they also purchased Breech Inlet last November at Keeneland for $50,000 in foal to Olympiad.

Another Ontario-bred sold well at the first session of the OBS sale. A colt by Omaha Beach from the mare All Dressed Up by Super Saver sold for $350,000 to Case Cay Thoroughbreds by pinhooker DeMeric Sales, agent. The colt, a $180,000 Keeneland September yearling, was bred by Jesse Korona.
For the first session, 153 horses sold for a total of $20,844,000 compared with 149 horses grossing $21,110,500 at last year’s first session. The session topper was a $1.2 million Tapit colt. The average price was $136,235, compared with $141,681 a year ago, while the median price was $72,000 compared with $70,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 26.4 %; it was 22.8.% in 2023.
Session 2: Another strong sale with a Not this Time colt selling for $1.5 million. Two Ontario-breds sold for over the $177,000 average for the session: a colt by More Than Ready – Paris Cruise, by First Samurai sold by Julie Davies, agent brought $360,000 from Ben Gowans, agent. The colt, bred by Mark Dodson, was sold by his breeder last September at Keeneland for $120,000 A colt by Nyquist – Mexican Hat, by Street Cry brought $325,000 from Fergus Galvin, agent. The Nyquist colt, bred by Anderson Farms and Narola, sold last year for $70,000 at Keeneland September and worked two furlongs in 21 1/5. He was sold by Caliente Thoroughbreds, agent.
For the second session, 144 horses sold for a total of $25,488,000 compared with 162 horses grossing $26,294,000 at last year’s second session. The average price was $177,000, compared with $162,309 a year ago, while the median price was $87,500, identical to last year. The buyback percentage was 31.7%; it was 21.4% in 2023.
