LOST STAR’s upset win in his grass debut on June 15 at Woodbine was a win for one of the smaller Woodbine stables, and a few of those scored nice victories on the weekend of June 14 and Father’s Day, June 15.
Lost Star is owned by Goldcrest Racing and trained by Marj Paterson, who bought the Indiana-bred for $8,500 from the Ocala Breeders’ Sales 2024 Winter Mixed Sale. He is a son of the Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm stallion Lost Treasure, an impeccably-bred son of War Frost with a third dam that is Group 1 winner Urban Sea.
Lost Star began his career in 2024 and was unplaced in all six races. This year he was last in his season debut, a route race on the Tapeta.
Sunday’s maiden race was Lost Star’s grass debut and he made an impressive, wide sweep around rivals under Jodein Anderson, inhaling the sizzling fast pace that was slowing down. Lost Star went on to a six-length victory at 8-to-1.
Trainer Warren LeBlanc won a race on two consecutive Sundays and on June 15 sent out INDY ONE to win for the second time this year. Sunny Singh rides Indy One, who led all the way to win the third race for Trinity Racing. The son of Seattle Serenade was claimed for $25,000 by Bruno Schickedanz.
KYLE SHARMAN, whose father Jay trained horses in the early 2000s, won his first career race as a trainer with his homebred SPRUNG LOOSE on June 15. The four-year-old by Danish Dynaformer is a son of Sharman’s mare Sprung at Last, whom Sharman bought for about $5,000 at the 2016 CTHS yearling sale.
Sharman, who has dabbled as an owner and/or trainer since 2012 and is a father of three, had Sprung Loose very ready for his 2025 opener at seven furlongs at the $40,000 maiden claiming level. Ridden by Jason ‘Jet Li’ Hoyte, Sprung Loose rallied in time to win by half a length, collecting $29,000 (USD).
While the stable is not small, PATRICK DIXON and Colebrook Farms won their first race of 2025 when HOLIDAY WITH AMY parlayed a perfect trip into a smart win in the first race on June 14. Leo Salles rode the daughter of Ami’s Holiday to a 4 3/4 length win in the $25,000 claiming race at seven furlongs. It was Holiday With Amy’s third career win. Holiday With Amy’s dam, Proud Vixen, is a half-sister to In Return, the dam of champion Channel Maker.
Dixon came right back on Sunday and won with Russata Stables’ ARABIAN PRINCE, who changed things up by winning by a nose (he has been second nine times in his career) in the 6 1/2 furlong turf race at the $50,000 optional claiming class. The seven-year-old by Mshawish fizzled in his season debut, but bounced back well to beat 2023 Champion Turf Male in Canada Lucky Score.
More weekend results
Most of the races on Tapeta (and grass for that matter) this past weekend were won by off-the-pace horses and that might have been in part due to a lot of races featuring very frantic early paces, early moves, or troubled trips.
A turf maiden race on Saturday won by Saratoga Empress saw RELOAD EH make a huge premature move to the lead and while she could not sustain that move, she stayed on well for second.
While the three-year-old filly DOLCE FORTUNA remained undefeated after three races, the speedy gal was just about caught in race 5 on June 14 by Sweet Passions, who had a terrible start from the gate. Tab Sweet Passions for next time.
ASK IN MY NAME ran one of the fastest races of the weekend, posting an 86 Beyer Figure for his win on Saturday for Devon Gittens. Ridden by Jalon Samuel, Ask in My Name came from last place behind a hot pace and won by a long margin while under a busy whip.
Other horses with troubled trips on the weekend included ECLIPTICAL LADYBUG, KITTEN’S ROMANCE, MAGICCREST and YORKTON ROSE.
