The $50,000 Supernaturel Stakes for three-year-old fillies going a mile and a sixteenth lost its 1-to-5 favourite at post time when CHI CHI TIME became fractious when the filly beside her, GIMLET, began to thrash around in the gate. Both fillies were scratched and the field was reduced to just four.
After the dust cleared, the winner was Jeff Sengara’s SOMEDAY LADY ($5.30), who had an uneventful trip under Kerron Khelawan, sitting in the clear on a slow pace, and had enough left in the stretch to grind out a solid victory in 1:46.12 (61 Beyer Speed Figure) for trainer Cindy Krasner. White Hall Farms I’M IN CONTROL set the pace on the rail under Antonio Reyes (24.70, 49.00, 1:14.26), battled determinedly to the finish, giving way grudgingly for trainer Keith Pedersen. Conrad Rozenek’s BREEZIN BRIANNE briefly tried for the early lead, but quickly yielded to sit in the pocket behind the slow pace under Richard Balgobin before tipping-out three-wide on the final bend to try and threaten the top two, but had to settle for third for trainer Mel Snow.
Someday Lady, by Cairo Prince – Tessanna by Storm Victory, was a $22,128 (US) purchase from the 2023 CTHS BC Mixed sale from breeders Helen Klimes and Willow Creek Farm. The BC-bred grey was making her first start back at Hastings after an unsuccessful stint at Santa Anita and Turf Paradise where she had three grass races, but was well beaten each time.
Last year at Hastings, Someday Lady won two of four starts including the Fantasy and Sadie Diamond Stakes.
Someday Lady is the third foal of Tessanna, a placed half-sister to six winners.
The Saturday opener was the $50,000 Chris Loseth Stakes for three-year-olds at a mile and a sixteenth with a field of only four. Hitting the line first was Lorie Henson’s RONDELITO ($8.20), who was off a step slow under Kimal Santo, forcing them to settle in behind a contested pace, before quickly sprinting clear entering the back straight and just lasting home by a diminishing margin to win in 1:45.15 (69 Beyer Figure) for trainer Steve Henson.
Brian Kozak’s ACCIDENTAL GENIUS was content to relax at the back of affairs, started to make ground on the stretch turn and had to await room on the rail, costing him as he ran out of real estate and checking in an unlucky runner-up for trainer Kim Kozak. Renfrew Racing, B and B Racing, Breen Racing, No Trump Stable and Matt Elder’s KYALAM set the pace with the heavily-favoured MOUNT DOOM (23.81, 47.93, 1:12.86) under Amadeo Perez and they won the pace battle, ending up a good third for trainer Mark Freeman.
Rondelito is by Lent – Vandelita by Street Sense and he was bred by Christine Ammann in BC. The gelding was bought for $29,517 (US) at the 2023 CTHS BC Mixed Sale. This is the second stakes win this year for Rondelito, who has three wins in seven races.
The Chris Loseth winner’s dam, Vandelita, has produced two other winners from two foals to race including stakes placed Wandalita. Vandelita, a two-time winner, is out of the same dam as Grade 1 winner Negligee.
