The ONTARIO SIRED HERITAGE SERIES is in Round 2 with the next two races in the program set for Sunday, July 27 at Woodbine. The Lake Superior Stakes and Thunder Bay Stakes are at 6 furlongs on the E.P. Taylor turf course.
Established in 2021, the Ontario Sired Heritage Series is comprised of three $100,000 legs and a $100,000 final for two divisions: three-year-old colts and geldings, and three-year-old fillies. The total purse structure for the series is $800,000.
There is a total of $70,000 in bonus money for the Heritage Series, $35,000 for each division (awarded $20,000, $10,000, $5,000) for the top three point-earning colts/geldings and fillies).
All three legs and the final are contested over different distances and surfaces: the Woodbine Inner Turf Course, the Woodbine E.P. Taylor turf, the Woodbine main track, and Fort Erie dirt track.
After one round, the two leaders in the colt/geldings and fillies divisions are back for more. GO KART MOZART, a son of Souper Speedy – Stormy Adieu by Silic (Fr), won the Lake Huron Stakes at five furlongs on the grass by half a length to claim 10 points. It was the third straight win for the dark bay who is owned and bred by Frank DiGiulio Jr. and trained by Bob Tiller. Sofia Vives will ride the front-runner who is trying six furlongs for the first time.
Richard Okihiro, Bev Chubb and Greg Secko’s Dark Screen, second in the Lake Huron, tried to duel Go Kart Mozart that day, but was edged on the wire. Dark Screen is by Big Screen.
The THUNDER BAY for the three-year-old fillies is headed by Georgian Bay winner RHAENYRA, by Reload – Starmaline by Star Guitar. Owned and bred by Al and Bill Ulwelling, the dark bay led all the way in the five-furlong Georgian Bay for her second win in three races this season.
Rhaenyra, who has Pietro Moran on board, will have serious competition for the early lead in this longer race and that can set things up for the very unlucky SWEET PASSIONS, who probably should have won her last two races that were troubled-filled. Owned by the estate of Paul Buttigieg, Sweet Passions is by Passion for Action and she is trained by Rick Hiyashi.
