More than two dozen Canadian-bred yearlings brought bids of six figures through the first seven sessions of the Keeneland September Sale which has five more days of sales.

Business at the biggest yearling sale in the world has been nothing short of an embarrassment of riches, with dozens of horses selling for $1 million or more.

Through Book 3, or six sessions that completed on Sunday, Sept. 14, Keeneland has sold 1,216 horses through the ring for $417,622,000, for an average of $343,439 and a median of $250,000. The gross is 24.14% higher than the same period last year, when 1,166 yearlings brought $336,408,000. The average is 19.04% above $288,515 from 2024, while the median is 19.05% higher than last year’s $210,000.

Fifty-six yearlings have sold for $1 million or more compared to 36 last year.

From the first two sessions, there were a few Canadian/Ontario-breds to go through the ring as reported on last week on CanadianThoroughbred.com:

  • A Curlin filly from Shadowing, $700,000, Lester Stable, Hill ‘n’ Dale at Xalapa, agent. This grey gal is from the winning mare Shadowing, whose dam is Grade 1 winner Streaming. From the immediate family of Rags to Riches.
  • An Uncle Mo – Sister Nation colt, $300,000, Uma Uma, Woods Edge Farm, agent V (bred by Mark Dodson). From stakes winner Sister Nation, whose half sister Sister Nova is the dam of multiple stakes winner Notorious Gangster
  • A Curlin – Summer in Saratoga filly, $600,000, Shadai Farm, Anderson Farms, agent (bred by David Anderson, agent). Third foal of Grade 3 winner Summer in Saratoga by Hard Spun.
  • Talbot Magic, a $175,000 colt,  DJ Stable Good Magic – Catch the Fire, Paramount Sales, agent IV – (bred by Karen Carroll) Half-brother to stakes-placed Legal Catch and King Rosso.

The highest price for an Ontario-bred was surpassed a couple of sessions later when an INTO MISCHIEF filly out of BLUE CURL brought $775,000 from Mike Ryan, agent from Anderson Farms, agent. The filly was bred by David Anderson and Don Ferguson. The filly’s dam is by Curlin and the first foal of the mare is Isle Blue, who is nearing a debut run in New York.

Anderson was the listed buyer of Blue Curl in 2021 at the Keeneland November sale, paying $275,000 for the mare in foal to Speightstown. That foal, Isle Blue, was a $375,000 yearling and last year’s yearling from Blue Curl, a Charlatan, brought $200,000.

Ted Burnett’s Josham Farms sold a colt by McKinzie for $650,000 to Belladonna Racing, West Point Thoroughbreds and Woodford Racing. The colt is from the placed mare Shan’s Tiger by Cahill Road. Shan’s Tiger, bought in foal to McKinzie for $201,000, is one of the last foals of her dam Shandra Smiles, who produced Grade 1 winner Smiling Tiger.

Dave Clancy’s Track West Racing had two big sales: an Omaha Beach out of the mare Spider Dust by Broken Vow brought $425,000 from Tracy Farmer, and a Jackie’s Warrior colt from his stakes-winning mare Marie MacKay (Noble Mission (GB)) he owns  by Don Whalen for $225,000.

PAUL BRAVERMAN sold an Omaha Beach colt from In Jail for $450,000 to Chad Summers, agent. Braverman bought In Jail for $75,000 in foal to Catholic Jackie through Reade Baker and he has sold  yearlings for $240,000 and $100,000.

Adrian Munroe’s Highfield Investment Group had a big score with a colt by Maclean’s Music from the mare Wild N Ready, which brought $450,000 from agent Donato Lanni. Highfield bought Wild n Ready in foal to Maclean’s Music for $60,000.

Another Anderson-bred, a grey filly by Charlatan – Halo’s Verse, was bought by social media personality David Portnoy and his Go Go Gray Horses group.
