The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Alberta Division’s yearling sale on Sept. 19 saw increases across the board in one of the strongest sales in the province in some 20 years.
A large catalogue saw 73 youngsters sell for $1,073,600, up from $707,000 a year ago. That resulted in an average of $14,036, rebounding from a soft 2024 auction when the average dipped to $12,403. The median price also bounced back to $10,000.
Topping the sale was Doug Oberg’s handsome bay gelding by young US sire Vekoma from the stakes-winning mare Janae, by Closing Argument. The gelding, named Vekoma’s Pride, reached a bid of $72,000 from Norm Tremblay, agent. Born on Leap Day 2024, Vekoma’s Pride was hip no. 52.
The top filly of the sale, and second highest-priced yearling, was Highfield Investment Group’s daughter of top Ontario sire Reload from the mare Ennis Lady, by Speightstown. The price of $53,000 was paid by the partnership of Stetson Enterprises Ltd., Ryan Stetson, Stetsco Inc. The chestnut is a half-sister to eight winners including stakes winner Grandma Jo. The Reload filly’s second dam is stakes winner Lady Aloma, a half-sister to Canadian Horse of the Year Benburb.
