The CTHS Ontario was inaugurated 50 years ago, in 1976, and its annual Canadian-bred yearling sale for 2026 will be one of the most anticipated in years. The catalogue is a bit smaller, dipping below 200 yearling offerings at 198, but demand figures to be strong, with recent funding for horse racing adding to purses and local programs.
This year’s sale is on September 2 at the Woodbine Sale Pavillion.
In 2025, the average yearling price of $27,353 was the highest in a decade and there were some new buyers bidding on yearlings. This weekend, the sales topper* from last year’s auction, a $400,000 Speightstown colt named FORZA, makes his career debut for owner Henley Thoroughbreds Ltd. (*the sale topper was bred by Mario Forgione and the colt will race for him).
Two champions currently racing in graded stakes, MY BOY PRINCE and PARAMOUNT PRINCE, were both CTHS sale graduates.
The catalogue cover this year honours E.P. Taylor and his remarkable horse Northern Dance plus his sons Nijinsky II and The Minstrel. Nijinsky II was a sale topper in 1968 at $84,000 and went on to win the British Triple Crown.
The top Canadian and American stallions are represented by yearlings. Some of those are TAPITURE (who has 86 winners this year), SOUPER SPEEDY, SILENT NAME (JPN). RELOAD, MUCHO MACHO MAN BIG SCREEN, FRAC DADDY,YORKTON, OLD FORESTER and up-and-comers BOND STREET, AVIE’S FLATTER and COLLUSION ILLUSION are among the sires with yearlings.
American stallions LIAM’S MAP (number nine in North America), MACLEAN’S MUSIC, VINO ROSSO, TIZ THE LAW, VIOLENCE, CAIRO PRINCE and new sires like Horse of the Year CODY’S WISH and Grade 1 winner PROXY, TAIBA and LOGGINS.
Leading first-crop sire GOLDEN PAL has a yearling entered in the sale, an Alberta-bred from the graded stakes-placed mare Elegant Supermodel (Ger), offered by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent, as does Breeders’ Cup Classic winner KNICKS GO, sire of Woodbine Oaks winner LUSTER. The Knicks Go filly is offered by Northern Dawn, agent.
Fourteen consignors offer horses in the sale: Hill ‘n’ Dale, Shannondoe, Northern Dawn, Nidel Charfi, New Beginnings, Richard Hogan, Ballycroy Bloodstock, Buttigieg Training Centre, Cara Bloodstock, John Carey, Susan Foreman, Tara Horse Farm, Spring Farm and Richard Moylan.
