Magic Broomstick, with jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson in the irons, swept by the field in mid-stretch en route a three-length score in Sunday’s $100,600 Avowal Stakes, at Woodbine.
The dark bay daughter of More Than Ready-Special Brush, trained by Malcolm Pierce for owner Sam-Son Farms, sat off the early pace of Man Stuff in the seven-furlong sprint over the E.P. Taylor Turf Course, and brushed by Atlantic Hurricane when asked en route to her first stakes score in a final running time of 1:21.99.
Man Stuff, under rider Eurico Rosa da Silva, set early splits of :22.92 and :46.15 with favoured Atlantic Hurricane keeping a watchful eye down the backstretch.
Atlantic Hurricane, with Emile Ramsammy up, advanced through the turn to take on the leader but the onrushing Magic Broomstick would not be denied. Chokurei rallied for place, 2 1/2-lengths in front of Silent Moon.
Wilson was pleased with the performance of the five-year-old mare, who was making her first start since October 29 of last year when third in the River Memories Stakes, at Woodbine.
“Malcolm had this filly primed and ready,” said Wilson. “She’s a good filly. She’s easy on herself and she was fit and ready a while back. We were able to get a peak effort (today).”
The veteran rider allowed Magic Broomstick to carry her into contention early in the stretch run.
“I know she can be pretty sharp early when she’s fresh and she did that,” said Wilson. “She put me in a good range. She’s the kind of filly, you almost feel like you don’t have enough when you turn for home. But, she sure gives a vicious kick when you ask for it. Sure enough, she flew home.”
Pierce was happy to see Magic Broomstick earn her first added-money score.
“She’s a lovely filly and now she’s a stakes winner which is a big deal for her pedigree,” said Pierce. “She’ll be off to the breeding shed next year, as a stakes winner.”
Magic Broomstick banked $60,000 in victory, improving her record to six wins, a second and four thirds from 14 career starts.
She paid $17.60, $9.20 and $4.50, combining with Chokurei ($8.50, $5.70) for a $154.60 (8-6) exactor. An 8-6-7 (Silent Moon, $4.50 to show) triactor was worth $906.50 while a $1 superfecta [8-6-7-2 (Poetic Kid)] came back $6,376.50. Forest Uproar was scratched.
