TORONTO, April 10 – Brereton Jones’ Biofuel rallied impressively to capture Saturday’s running of the $150,000 Star Shoot Stakes at Woodbine.
The Reade Baker trainee was a two-length winner over Sharp Secretary, who was contesting her first added-money feature. Tee Game was third.
It was the seasonal debut for three-year-old Biofuel, who shared Sovereign Award honours as Canada’s top two-year-old filly in 2009.
The Kentucky-bred daughter of Stormin Fever now has three wins from six starts.
Under a confident ride from Eurico Rosa da Silva, Biofuel was last as the field turned for home, but systematically picked off her rivals down the lane, showing the same strong stretch kick she fashioned in her troubled fourth-place finish in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita.
“She had so much power,” said da Silva, aboard the bay for the fifth time. “When I asked her, she accelerated. Last year, she ran so mellow, relaxed and easy. She was on the muscle the whole way. She said, ‘Eurico, let me go, please.’ I think she was very happy when I turned her loose.”
Biofuel travelled six panels in 1:10.01.
“She sat behind those horses and went around them,” said Baker, who will point Biofuel towards the La Lorgnette Stakes on May 23 at Woodbine. “My job is to get her mellow for the La Lorgnette. I was very, very happy with her. We’ll look to fry some bigger fish.”
Biofuel paid $4.80 and $3.50, combining with Sharp Secretary ($4) for a $16 exactor. Tee Game completed a $63 triactor. There was no show wagering.
