Woodbine Entertainment Group has imposed a quarantine on Woodbine Racetrack’ Barn 1 as a precaution against equine herpes virus (EHV-1).
On June 10th, two horses from Barn 1 who were exhibiting signs of illness, including fever and neurological symptoms, were shipped to the Ontario Veterinary College for evaluation, where one, a two-year-old unraced filly trained by Tom O’Keefe, was later euthanized.
On June 12th it was announced that the cause of the illness was, in fact, EHV-1, and that quarantine measures would remain in place until further notice.
EHV-1 is a highly contagious disease, which can cause range in severity from causing flu-like symptoms to severe neurological disease. Learn more here and get handling instructions for grooms here to help prevent the spread of disease.
Update:
Until further notice, there will be NO supply of buckets for drinking or bathing, by the Test Barn Staff.
Each Trainer must supply their own equipment when going to the test barn post-race.
