As the 2013 CTHS Canadian-Bred Yearling Sale comes to a close, the Open Session results reflect the continuing negative impact on the Thoroughbred industry, resulting from the Government’s mis-directed decision to end the Slots at Racetracks Program. This year’s Gross Sales showed a decrease of 30.8% from 2012.
With a 16% decrease in the number catalogued for this session, both the average and the median were greatly affected. The average was down 7.8% to $4,521 and the median fell from $3,500 to $3,000 representing a 14% decline year over year.
While the results highlight the severe strain impacting the viability of the Thoroughbred industry in Ontario, the underlying fundamentals of the program showed a glimmer of optimism, evidenced by the aggregate prices of the Sales-topping Colt and Filly, an 18.4% increase over 2012.
Topping the Open Session was Hip #301, purchased for $32,000 by Frank Di Giulio, Jr. The bay colt by Not Bourbon out of the Northern Afleet mare Fleet Kris was sold by Woodlands (Gail Wood), Agent.
The second highest priced yearling in this session was Hip #355 purchased for $26,000 by Robert Tiller and Frank Di Giulio, Jr. The dark bay or brown filly by Rebellion (GB) out of the Broken Vow mare Promise Ring was sold by Hill ‘N’ Dale Sales Agency, Agent.
The CTHS Ontario Division would like to extend its gratitude to all those who participated in this year’s Sale and we congratulate you for your commitment and perseverance in these uncertain times.
