DR. MARK DEDOMENICO talks Eclipse Award for 2yo filly
His filly She’s a Tiger vs. Ria Antonia
“I have no idea who’s going to get it, but we’re going anyway,” Dedomenico said. “We need to be there because she’s done such a good job for us this year.” – from DRF, Jay Hovdey
This is a cool column by Jay Hovdey in DAILY RACING FORM as She’s a Tiger’s co-owner Dr. Mark Dedomenico talks about whether his filly, who ‘won’ the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies only to be disqualified, will win the Eclipse Award.
It’s an interesting notion to ponder since voting for the SOVEREIGN AWARDS closes at 5 p.m. today
and RIA ANTONIA is one the list of eligible fillies to be named Canada’s champion 2yo filly on April 11.
How the voters have pegged this category for the Eclipse Awards won’t be known until Saturday night (you can watch the stream of the awards on the web) but I can say that I voted for She’s a Tiger, based on her consistently good record all season. She was as tough as nails and while she may have drifted in the BC, she may not have ever let Ria Antonia past.
RIA ANTONIA won 2 of 5 races, a maiden race at Woodbine and the DQ’d win. In other starts she was 5th in the My Dear at Woodbine, 4th in the Swynford and 5th in the Frizette.
It would be hard to award this filly a championship based on that record: and just as tough to reward her at the SOVEREIGN AWARDS,although I am sure there are some voters in Canada who will simply look at earnings and say ‘she should win’.
The winner of top 2yo filly should be PALADIN BAY.
PALADIN BAY raced 9 times with 3 wins, 3 seconds and 2 thirds and earnings of $361,888. She won or placed in 7 STAKES RACES and won the Princess Elizabeth and Ontario Colleen. She was the best 2yo filly in Canada over another tough gal, Lexie Lou.

KEVIN ATTARD/STEVEN CHIRCOP WIN A PAIR AT PENN
It has been a frustrating few weeks of entering and having racing cancelled for several Woodbine trainers at tracks such as Penn National and Parx.
Steven Chircop has had a litany of horses entered and he finally got to race two of them last night at Penn National and both won.
CHOCOLATO, owned by KEVIN ATTARD, won a $7,500 claiming race by 3 1/2 lengths at 2 to 1. The Macho Uno filly was bred by Dermot Carty.
It was Attard and Chircop again when BOLD CAILIN won a $5,000 claiming race later on the card at 40 cents on the dollar. That filly, by Bold Executive, was bred by Dr David James and she was claimed.
Meanwhile at Gulfstream, NICK AND MARTHA GONZALEZ continue to collect wins. BEST BEHAVIOUR won for $20,000 claiming yesterday and was claimed. The Into Mischief filly was bred by James and Janeane Everatt and Arika Eveatt Meusse.

EXCHANGE Wagering set for USA
Betfair has reached a five-year agreement and exchange wagering will likely make its debut in the U.S. when live racing returns to the New Jersey track Monmouth Park in May.
The state’s legislature approved exchange wagering in 2011, allows fans to wager against one another, set their own odds and wager during races. After final regulatory measures are resolved, Monmouth will become the first track in the U.S. to offer exchange wagering, which was introduced in Europe by the British-based Betfair a decade ago.
“We’re very pleased to continue our relationship with Betfair,” commented Dennis Drazin, advisor to the track’s operator Darby Development. “TVG Betfair has been an integral part of Monmouth Park’s success.
