Robert Smithen’s Anne’s Beauty prevailed over a game Nina Fever to take an exciting edition of the $150,000 Glorious Song Stakes at Woodbine.
Under winning rider David Clark, the bay filly closed strongly in upper stretch to draw even with the 4-5 favorite from the Wesley Ward barn, who had been softened up by a robust :44.91 opening half-mile.
Anne’s Beauty and Nina Fever put on a dramatic show in the final eighth of a mile, drawing off more than eight lengths clear of third-place finisher Fun Filled. As hard as Nina Fever tried to come back on the inside, Anne’s Beauty stayed in front and refused to let her rival by, prevailing by a short head. Covering seven furlongs in 1:22.64, Anne’s Beauty is now 2-for-3 in her young career.
Starting for the first time since a maiden score on August 27, trainer Paul Attard had her beautifully prepared for a top effort off the shelf. The daughter of Artie Schiller was part of the post parade in last month’s Mazarine, but never got the chance to participate in the 1 1/16-mile fray.
“Last time, in the Mazarine, they had to scratch her at the gate. She was acting up,” said Attard, who is a son of Sid Attard. “She got a lot of gate schooling and a lot of paddock schooling. She showed she was much more professional.”
Attard said he’s excited about assigning another route to the filly. “She’s very versatile. Wait and see her go two turns,” affirmed Attard. The two-year-old filly was bred in Kentucky by Richard Forbush and Doug Oliver.
Anne’s Beauty returned $30.20, $7.80 and $3.60, combining with Nina Fever ($3, $2.40) for a $108.10 exactor. Fun Filled ($2.50) rounded out a triactor worth $250.60.
Smart Sting was scratched.
