RAISE A TOAST – PHIL wins for Clarkson, ALLURING and Lovely

 Saturday re-cap at Woodbine

PHIL’S COCKTAIL won his 2nd stakes race as a 2yo when he stalked and charged wide to take the 7 furlong FROST KING Stakes on Saturday under David Moran. Trainers by John LeBlanc, Phi’s Cocktail won with his ears pricked while looking a bit green coming to the wire of the $125,000 race. He had won the Simcoe Stakes earlier this year.
Bred by Clarkson, who bred multiple stakes winner Twisted Wit and who has been racing in Ontario for many years with a litany of different trainers, Phil’s Cocktail is by Philanthropist out of Sunset Cocktail by Precise End.
The time was 1:22 4/5, a 72 Beyer Speed Figure.  The late pace was solid and heavily favoured Goodoldhckeygame was far, far behind early and rallied too late to be second for Frank DiGiilio Jr.

Meanwhile, EXECUTIVE ALLURE led all the way to win the Jammed Lovely at 7 furlongs in startling time of 1:21 4/5, an 87 Beyer Figure.  The Bold Executive – Ready and Alluring, More Than Ready filly had been 4th in the Ruling Angel against open company following a poor run at Charles Town, but had won the Passing Mood on the grass in the summer. Owned and bred by Bill Sorokolit and trained by Darwin Banach, the filly was ridden by Jesse Campbell.

race 1– HOT CROSS BUNS won the opener at odds-on in her 4th career start but it was a bit tricky as she had some traffic trouble. This very attractive daughter of the nice local sire SINGING SAINT had been 2nd to the very good London Tower in her 2nd race of her life and then had a dull race in a route event last time when she either did not handle the distance or bled. She was 1st time Lasix for Box Arrow Farm and Gord Colbourne and she rallied between fillies in the late stages of this 7 furlong race for Ontario sired gals to win under Luis Contreras.

race 2- CREATIVE THUNDER dropped to $20,000 claiming, stretched out to 9 furlongs from a sprint and tossed the blinkers aside for a narrow, britty win in thihs race for non-winners of 2. Thee grey son of Tapit, bred by Joe Baldesarra and also owned by Dennis Baldesarra came from last place in a tightly bunched field and threaded his way through under good handling by Emma-Jayne Wilson.
Ian Black trains.

race 3 – a lovely maiden allowance for 2yo fillies at 5 furlongs and it was Sam-Son Farms’ READY FOR ROMANCE who was up to the task in her debut, pressing the pace and taking the lead to narrowly win under Eurico da Silva. The Malcolm Pierce trainee is by More Than ready and a half sister to winner Cleancut Kid; She debuted with Lasix.

race 4 – First leg of the Pick 4, PUGLSEY, from the rail post at 7 furlongs, was sent to the lead by jockey Gerry Olguin and what a strategy that was – 22 3/5, 44 4/5 in front by almost 8 lengths turning for home.
The 5 to 1 shot was slowing down a bit late but he hung on over King Forester in 1:22 3/5, a 76 Beyer Figure. He was just 2nd beaten 5 lengths in a race that ran in similar time on Oct. 11 . He is owned by Tallyho Racing and Susan Rasmussen and was bred by Susan Rasmussen and is trained by Earl Barnett. The 4yo is by Mobil and he is 2 for 7 this year and 5 for 18 in his career.

Race 5 – The wins keep piling up for trainer Greg Cox and his ownerships team of Cindu Cox and Lisa MCCallum Smith. in what has been a remarkable year, the group won with 2 to 1 CITO who appears to have been bought privately since he was 2nd at odds on in his most recent maiden allowance. The 3yo gelding is by Alphabet Soup out of Victoria Bay by Northern Afleet, bred by Frank Mermenstein b and Tom McCrocklin.

race 7 – COZY LEAD rallied late to win this $12,500 claiming race for owner/trainer Jamie Attard. thr son of Pulpit was a winner for $20,000 in his last race against maidens. Jesse Campbell rode.

Race 9  – JESSE CAMPBELL won his third straight race as he guided COPPER KITTEN to a predictable win in this 1 1/16 mile allowance race for Richard and Jo Ellen Shaw and trainer David Bell. It was the 2nd straight win for this nice Kitten’s Joy filly who came from well back and wide but finally got there over a tough front runner in Angel With Class.

The day ended on a down note with what appears to have been a very serious injury to SILENT WISH, who was making his 3rd career start in the $10,000 maiden event. The Silent Name gelding raced erratically early in the 1 1/16 mile race, battled on the lead but then suddenly stopped on the last turn. Before he was pulled up something when wrong in behind and he eventually was stopped.
The winner was HES THE RIGHT ONE, who is a Paul Buttigieg homebred by Sligo Bay.

FRIDAY –

Race 1 – ARCTIC KID won his maiden in his 5th career race for Paul Cooper and John Cardella. This is a Bold Executive gelding bred by Paradox Farm and Hugh Sutherland, a $30,000 yearling purchase. Sheena Ryan rode the gelding.

Race 2- Two wins in succession for WAITINGINTHEWINGS and jockey Ericka Smilovsky. The Colebrook farms homebred is a 5yo by Niigon and she won for $16,000 claiming on Oct. 12 off a summer vacation and won on Friday for $23,500. Ashlee Brjas trains.

Race 3  – Another horse on a winning streak is George Bigliardi’s CLUB ONE TWO, who took this allowance race in just her 3rd start of 2014. Trained by Paul Attard, the Niigon 4yo filly is a homebred who is 3 for 6 in her career and Patrick Husbands rode her.

Race 4- MAYS TREASURETROVE, owned by Ben Hutzel and trained by Mike DePaulo, won this $62,50 claiming race by a length for her 4th win in her 25th start. The Forestry mare was ridden by Luis Contreras.

Race 5- PEGGYSANEXECUTIVE dropped in for $8,000 claiming and won this race at 6 furlongs by a neck for owner/breeder Osprey Stable and trained Ian Black. The Bold Executive filly was ridden by Emma-Jayne Wilson.

Race 6 – the 72 Beyer Figure posted by DEVOTED WILDCAT was the highest of the day. He won for the first time this year in his 8th outing and he is owned by Barry Arnason and Marty Drexler. Patrick Husbands rode the 5to gelding who is 7 for 37 in his career and 2 for 8 on Polytrack.

Race 7 – CAPONE led all the way to win this $19,000 claiming race for Pinkston racing and trainer Kevin Attard. The Stormy Atlantic gelding is 2 for 6 in his career and he was 10 to1 uner Gerry Olguin.

Race 8 – RING WITH BLING,by Where’s the Ring, is a homebred for Paul Buttigieg and co-owned by Gus Vlahos and she won this 5 furlong ONtario sired allowance by 1/2 a length in 58.01 for her 2nd career win. David Moran rode.

Race 9 – The final race was won by favoured I AM PERSUADED, the Silver Duck Racing homebred by Piccilo Pete who was dropping from $50,000 maiden claiming to $10,000. Jim McAleney rode the 5yo mare.

LEXIE LOU to Matriarch or Hollywood Derby

Del Mar, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – Champion trainer Mark Casse is spending the latter part of 2014 in Southern California with a large number of horses stabled at Del Mar for the track’s inaugural Bing Crosby Season.

Most prominent is Queen’s Plate winner Lexie Lou. The 3-year-old filly, who also won the Woodbine Oaks, is probable to start in a stakes race while at Del Mar.

“She’ll run in the Matriarch (one mile on the turf, Nov. 30) or we may run her against the boys in the Hollywood Derby (1 1/8 miles on turf, Nov, 29),” Casse said.

Lexie Lou, owned by Gary Barber, won the 1 1/4-mile Queen’s Plate by 1 1/2 lengths as the 3-1 second pick. The filly followed by winning the Wonder Where Stakes at Woodbine five weeks later on Aug. 10. After finishing 10th in the Canadian Stakes on grass, Lexie Lou won the Autumn Miss Stakes on Oct. 25.

The 3-year-old has banked $1,059,470 this year with four wins from seven starts.

Casse, a six-time Sovereign Award winner as Canada’s top trainer, started four horses in last week’s Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita. Two finished fourth, Conquest Eclipse (Juvenile Fillies) and Conquest Typhoon (Juvenile Turf), with Kaigun 10th in the Mile and Conquest Harlanate 11th in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

“The Breeders’ Cup has been hard on me,” Casse said. “Going in we didn’t know what Conquest Typhoon would do and he actually ran well, finishing fourth beaten three lengths and he ran way farther than anyone else.
