KAIGUN CRUSHES – Canadian bred wins Seabiscuit S. Grade 2

Canadian bred 4yo KAIGUN, the top turf miler owned by Gary Barber, Tina Casse and Harvey Schwartz, came from last with a wild stretch run to win the Seabiscuit Stakes at Del Mar yesterday. Trained by Mark Casse, Kaigun won the Play the King Stakes at Woodbine this summer and was recently 10th in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

This chestnut fellow is by Northern Afleet from Cruising Kris by Kris S and he was bred by Bill Sorokolit.

Cruising Kris won $18,000 in her career from 2 starts. She has produced 8 winners and is from the mare Pierluche, a daughter of Pierlou out of Pink Nightie by Windfields.

Kaigun was bought back by his owners for 34,000 as a 2yo in training.

On the eve of California Chromemania, trainer Mark Casse started the first course with a win by Kaigun ($9) in the Grade II Seabiscuit Handicap on Friday.

Now, Casse, the Canadian-based trainer who made a foray into Southern California racing for the first time this summer at the seaside oval, hopes to take the main course, too. He will send out Lexie Lou against California Chrome in Saturday’s Grade I Hollywood Derby. Lexie Lou is the 3-year-old filly who beat the boys in the Queen’s Plate, which is Canada’s equivalent of the Kentucky Derby, this spring and figures to be a formidable foe Saturday afternoon.

Kaigun had been facing some of the top grass horses in the country like Wise Dan (three times), Main Sequence and Karakontie, who won the Breeders’ Cup Mile Turf earlier this month, before Friday.

Contreras is in Japan this weekend so Husbands has a chance to make a buffer between the two if he can win some races over the next 2 days.

Friday at Woodbine –

THREE RING CIRCUS is a head away from being unbeaten in 3 races and he won this allowance race for 2yos for his 2nd straight win for Frank DiGiulio Jr. Robert Tiller trains this promising son of Where’s the Ring from Yolie, by Menifee.
It’s early but this bay gelding could be a Queen’s Plate horse for DiGiulio and Tiller in 2015. Gary Boulanger rode.
The time of 1:11.88 was good for a 72 Beyer Figure.

NORTH OF NEVER won race 2 for the hot Marty Drexler stable. This is a Kentucky bred by North Light (Ire) and he won this $25,000 claiming race under Emma-Jayne Wilson for his 3rd win of the season from his 9th race.
The 5yo led all the way while being pestered on the pace and he was winning for the first time for his current owners, Finish Line bar. He posted the day’s best 88 Beyer Figure.

Race 3 was an allowance race for Ontario sired fillies and mares and MOONLITE GLINT remained unbeaten in 2 starts with this front running score under David Moran. The Paul Buttigieg homebred is by Bold ‘n Flashy out of Moonlite Walk by Migrating Moon.

Race 4- More wire-to-wire success as GRANDMA’S HOUSE  took this allowance/optional claiming event in fast time, posting an 80 Beyer Figure for 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:18.13. The Limehouse filly has won 3 of 8 races this year and she was winning of the claiming for trainer Norm McKnight; Justin Stein rode. Generous Consort was up for 2nd over Virreina.
Race 5 – Favoured BEAR’S MUSIC came from 3 lengths off the pace to win this $8,00 claiming race for Bear Stables and trainer Reade Baker. She was claimed by Connie Patton. The winner is a Bear’s Kid filly out of Feverish Dream by War Deputy and she is a Kentucky bred who just won her maiden for $9,500. Patrick Husbands rode.
Race 6 – MUGWUMP won on the lead all the way and 5 to 2 for Hard Eight Stables and Ace Racing. This Pleasant Tap filly opened up a long lead in the maiden $8,000 claiming race at 1 1/16 miles and held on to win by 1 1/4 lengths over Erie Breeze. Scott Fairlie trains and Michelle Rainford rode.

Race 7 – a rare rallying winner as JENNY COME LATELY wore down front runner E Xentrix to win this $10,000 claiming race under Omar Moreno. The wimer is owned by Hopefield Farm and traines by Alex McPherson. She is a Macho Uno Kentucky bred 5-year-old mare who was winning for the first time this year.

Race 8 – The second winner for Frank DiGiulio Jr. and trainer Robert Tiller and Patrick Husbands – MAYTHEFOURTHBEWITHU led all the way after an early pace battle and she won by 2 lengths. This allowance race was her 4th win of the season from 8 races. The Silent Name – Cat’s Calling by Call I.D. filly has won over $200,000 and she was bought at auction for $4,000.

Race 9 Favoured IMPERATORE finally got his maiden win in this $12,500 event. Breaking from the rail in the 8 horse field, the Roman Ruler – Singit, by Sultray Song gelding came from 3 lengths off the pace and was up to win by a half length under Gerry Olguin. It was his 10th career race for Sue Leslie and Glenn Sikura.
Betting on the Friday afternoon was $2.6 million, a tidy sum for a weekday.

California Chrome should be Horse of the Year in the US but he gets a chance to put an exclamation mark on that point in the Hollywood Derby.

Anything close to what he can run (105-113 Beyer Figures) can win his grass debut. Lexie Lou, already Canada’s Horse of the Year before voting has begun, has a chance to hit the board.

ALERT BAY, Canadian-owned, wins Zia Park Derby in track record time

The 3-year-old star ALERT BAY, probably the best sophomore to have raced in Canada,  had won the BC Derby and BC Premier’s at Hastings Park recently for owner Peter Redekop. The son of City Zip is based at Golden Gate. He has won 6 of 12 races and almost $500,000.

Alert Bay is in the zone. He won his third straight stakes race Wednesday, pulling clear by three lengths over 3-5 favorite Tonito M. in the $200,000 Zia Park Derby. In the process, Alert Bay set a track record for 1 1/16 miles, covering the distance in 1:41.80.
