The year 1961 was a truly significant one for the Canadian horse racing and breeding industry. The year marked the birth of two icons, Northern Dancer and Canadian Thoroughbred magazine.
The ‘Dancer, owned and bred by E.P. Taylor, was Canada’s favourite son as he marched through wins in the Kentucky Derby and Queen’s Plate and then changed the industry worldwide forever with his incredible sons and daughters.
Canadian Thoroughbred Magazine was launched by John J. Mooney as Canadian Horse in March/April of 1961. Mooney, the general manager of The Jockey Club Ltd. and vice-president of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society, said owners and breeders recognized “our industry needed a voice to unite then and their efforts to improve racing and breeding in Canada.”
