MARINE STAKES – Inaugurated in 1956, the Marine Stakes is the first major route test on the way to the Queen’s Plate. It is an open race so it can be won by sophomores not eligible for the Plate. Since the year 2000, 2 horses have used the marine as a means to a Plate victory. Roger Attfield will saddle the exciting Danish Dynaformer and Attfield is tied for the most wins in the Marine at 4.
The Marine is named for the colt of 1926, MARINE, a son of Man o’ War. Marine won the King Edward Gold Cup and the Connaght cup among other good races in Canada and the US.
