LUCKY LANDS AT WOODBINE

A fascinating weekend at Woodbine awaits fans with 3 stakes races over 2 days and 2 nice events on a super Sunday card.

The Grade 2 Nijinsky Stakes came up with a big field for 1 1/8 miles on what should be firm turf in humid weather. Two Germans ship in for the race: Grade 1 winner LUCKY SPEED, the GERMAN DERBY winner from 2 years ago and LETRO, a 6-time winner in 9 races and a son of Montjeu.

The race is packed with quality: ARE YOU KIDDING ME just won the Eclipse, Grade 2 and is a turf lover; Sam-Son may run Golden Sabre and/or HIS RACE TO WIN although one may go in the Seagram Cup; ZA APPROVAL is a millionaire looking to get back in form and EXCAPER will try blinkers off as he seeks to get over the hump for his first win of the year.

LUCKY SPEED loves long grass races. He is 1st time Lasix for his Woodbine debut on Sunday

PRINCE OF WALES – JULY 28 FORT ERIE – (7)

Probable field:

SHAMAN GHOST

BREAKING LUCKY

BILLY’S STAR

OAKTON

FIELD OF COURAGE

CONQUEST BOOGALOO

SCORCH

Trainer Roger Attfield has not decided totally on Billy or Danish Dynaformer going into the Wales on dirt, most likely Billy’s Star will start. The incredibly unlucky CONQUEST BOOGALOO will run with FIELD OF COURAGE (by Marchfield) and OAKTON (Macho Uno). SHAMAN GHOST, the Plate winner, will have a workout on Tuesday on the training track and Brian Lynch will be in town to monitor the event.

“It may come up a small field but it sure is competitive.” said Lynch on Friday to THOROUGHBLOG. “I would be scared of [Conquest Boogaloo], he got slammed at the start and still ran well.”

Trainer MARK FROSTAD noted that SCORCH  will likely run as that colt has good dirt form while others in the race have not done well on dirt as of yet. “We certainly would not mind a really rainy day either,” said Frostad, who trains Scorch for George Strawbridge.

YOU KNOW WHO IS BACK TO WORK! LEXIE  LOU!

She’s  baaaaack at WOODBINE!

Horse of the Year, champion 3-year-old filly and chapion turf female of 2014 LEXIE LOU had her first published workout since she finished 2nd in the La Canada Stakes in January recently.
At Winding Oaks Farm in Ocala, Florida., Lexie Lou worked 4 furlongs on the grass in 47 3/5 and then shipped to Woodbine, arriving yesterday.

and WISE DAN worked on Friday!

One of the best horses in the world, WISE DAN, had his first workout in 8 months on Friday when he went 48 1/5 on the grass at Keeneland, pleasing trainer Charles Lopresti. The gelding is coming off a right leg fracture and the WOODBINE MILE on Sept. 7 is one of 3 options for the gelding’s return.

ALYSSA SELMAN DETERMINED TO WALK AND RIDE AGAIN
Assiniboia Downs site of fundraiser July 19

From Globalnews.ca by Lorraine Nickel

WINNIPEG – For only an hour a day, Alyssa Selman can sit in a wheelchair.

Precious time before being confined to a bed once again.

“This is quiet nice actually,” said Selman Saturday, during an interview with Global News at the Health Sciences Centre.

Two weeks ago, her life changed forever. As the 29-year old jockey, a mother of two, was racing to the finish line at Assiniboia Downs, her horse Lord Jasmond clipped the heels of the horse in front of him, violently throwing Alyssa to the ground.

“I don’t remember getting ready to ride,” said Alyssa, “I don’t remember the race, I don’t remember the accident.”
