EXPLOSIVE RUN FOR DANISH DYNAFORMER
9th Breeders’ win for Attfield, 4th for Husbands
So, Danish Dynaformer is just fine, thank you. The beaten Queen’s Plate favourite was dusted at Fort Erie on the dirt in the second jewel of the Triple crown but the Breeders’ was always the biggest goal. And he accomplished it with flair.
Charles Fipke’s homebred by Dynaformer – Danish Wildcat by Danehill cruised to a 7 1/2 length win with a 91 Beyer Figure over a grass course that was on the yielding side. The 124th Breeders’ was the 9th Breeders’ win for trainer Roger Attfield and the fourth for jockey Patrick Husbands.
Queen’s Plate winner Shaman Ghost has been watching and waiting since he was 2nd in the prince of Wales. Wales winner breaking Lucky faded in the Breeders and was last.
Attfield is excited about the colt as a 4yo and does not know what is in store for the colt for the remainder of 2015. No doubt if he has his druthers, the colt may take a break until 2016, or race just once more. Certainly her next long grass races available will be for older horses.
Alan Garcia, jockey of runner-up Conquest Boogaloo, acknowledged a rough ride on his three-year-old.
“It was rough in the first part but he came with a big run,” Garcia said. “It was unlucky we were a little too far back, we followed the wrong horses and we ended up going backwards. It was just a tough trip.”
Lucky Lindy appeared to be a threat at the head of the lane, but he too succumbed to the much-the-best winner, according to jockey Robby Albarado.
“At the three-eighths pole I took a little run at the winner,” Albarado said. “He was the horse to beat and I made him work for a little while, but he showed his class and went on.”
Danish Dynaformer earned $300,000 for the win to push his career bankroll to over $608,938. He broke his maiden in February of this year on the turf at Gulfstream Park and romped in an allowance race over yielding turf at Keeneland. He won the Plate Trial Stakes on June 14 on Woodbine Polytrack, setting the stage for his narrow loss to Shaman Ghost in the Queen’s Plate.
WAGERING on Breeders’ day was $4.3 million – more than $1 million higher than last year’s Breeders’ day. Wow.
INTERPOL UPSET/ BLUE IS RUTHLESS
(WITH FILES FROM WOODBINE MEDIA)
DENNIS NARLINGER’S Interpol, the longest shot on the board at 25-1, turned the tables on Are You Kidding Me and Golden Sabre to win a thrilling edition of Sunday’s $232,400 Grade 2 Sky Classic Stakes, at Woodbine.
Trained by Sid Attard for Narlinger’s JMJ Racing Stables LLC, Interpol arrived at the 1 1/4-mile turf event from an even fifth-place run in the Grade 2 Nijinsky Stakes won by rival Are You Kidding Me by a half-length over Golden Sabre.
Sky Flight set the tempo in the Sky Classic posting moderate splits of :25.81, :50.07 and 1:14.02 over a ‘firm’ E.P. Taylor Turf Course, with Are You Kidding Me keeping close watch from second position.
Interpol, stalked from third position under Emma-Jayne Wilson, and advanced three-wide late in the turn to engage the new leader Are You Kidding Me as Golden Sabre, piloted by Luis Contreras, struggled to find racing room in third.
Interpol, with a powerful stretch drive, took command late in the lane and dug in to hold off the surging Golden Sabre by a neck. Are You Kidding Me lost the place position by a nose, while Mr Speaker, sent to post as the 8-5 mutuel favourite, rallied for fourth. Interpol stopped the clock in 2:01.05.
Wilson, who picked up the mount from the injured Jesse Campbell, was aboard Interpol for the first time.
“Sid said if it was slow enough he’ll be there and settle real nice for you. It was exactly what happened,” said Wilson. “Boulanger (on Sky Flight) shot away from the gate and I knew he would be in a nice tracking position and settle for me. When I called on him, he dug in deep, really deep.”
The decision to engage Are You Kidding Me at the top of the lane was key.
“I thought (Are You Kidding Me) was one of the horses to beat. We got half a head in front of him and I was just concerned with whether or not I could hold Are You Kidding Me off. (If we held him) then I think we could hold everyone else as well. I think he (Interpol) had the same thought. With his ears pinned, he kept his head in front and he was doing it all on heart fighting for everything he could get.”
The victory marked the first added money score for the four-year-old English Channel bay who finished a game second on this day last season when second in the Breeders’ Stakes, at odds of 18-1, to Ami’s Holiday.
Ruth Less Blue went gate to wire to take Saturday’s co-featured $150,000 Vandal Stakes, at Woodbine.
Trained by Scott Fairlie for Rijack Farm and Ace Racing Stable Inc., the dark bay son of Giant Gizmo, sent to post as the 4-5 mutuel favourite in the six furlong ‘Poly’ stake for Ontario-bred juveniles, was guided to a second consecutive victory by Michelle Rainford.
Ruth Less Blue’s front-running score was characteristic of his maiden victory on August 2 when sprinting six furlongs on the Woodbine main. Leaving from the outside post in a compact field of five, Ruth Less Blue broke out of the gate swiftly and took a commanding lead through splits of :22:85 and :46.23 with Get’erdonebud tracking his early foot. Ruth Less Blue moved comfortably around the turn, holding onto a narrow lead, as Get’erdonebud and Conquest Daddyo advanced into contention.
With an eighth of a mile to run, Ruth Less Blue veered towards the rail, when hit right handed and ducked in sharply again at the sixteenth pole, but quickly straightened out, resiliently staying on for a half-length win. Conquest Daddyo, piloted by Patrick Husbands, rallied three-wide down the stretch, to earn place by 1 ¼-lengths over Get’erdonebud. Final running time for the six furlong event was 1:10:7. It was a 70 Beyer Figure.
Habibi, patiently ridden by Emma-Jayne Wilson, was full of run down the lane en route to an impressive score in Saturday’s co-featured $102,600 Flaming Page Stakes, at Woodbine.
Trained by Mark Frostad for Augustin Stable, Habibi arrived at the 1 1/2-mile turf stake for older fillies and mares from a disappointing eighth-place run against the boys in the Grade 3 Singspiel Stakes on July 5.
Bred in New Zealand, the six-year-old Ekraar mare was winning her first race since conquering the boys in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby on March 2, 2013.
Habibi covered 1 1/2-miles in 2:28.81.
Wilson was pleased with the trip she engineered in the 1 1/2-mile stamina test.
“I was a little worried the pace may string out and that Tiz Ro could get away on her own. I just wanted to have my filly settled, covered in behind somebody, and switch her off a little bit,” said Wilson. “She was just cruising easy. A mile and a half is fun when you have a horse that can go the distance and she’s bred to do it.”
Habibi arrived in North America in 2014 and made a single start when eighth in the Grade 2 Royal Heroine at Santa Anita. The dark bay mare returned to action this spring at Santa Anita for a pair of starts before shipping to Woodbine and narrowly missing a win in her Canadian debut when nosed at the wire in a grassy optional claiming event.
Habibi banked $60,000 in victory while improving her record to 7-1-3 from 15 starts.
HAMMERS VISION – graded stakes placed for sire COURT VISION
First crop Ontario sired COURT VISION is off a to good start at stud and his son HAMMERS VISION was 3rd in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special last week for owner Terry Hamilton. LUCKY SPEED, AMERICAN ST LEGER WINNER, COULD BE ON WAY BACK TO WOODBINE
(ARLINGTON POST/HORSE RACING NATION)
Grade III $350,000 American St. Leger winner and track record-setter Lucky Speed was in top shape on Sunday morning after his sharp victory. The race was his first win since taking the Group I $642,000 German Derby in 2013. Currently under sale consideration, the son of Silvano may change hands soon. Otherwise, the plan is to race in the Grade I $300,000 Northern Dancer Stakes at Woodbine in September, as well as the Grade I $1,000,000 Canadian International at that same course in October.
Qatar Racing and Newsells Park Stud, the owners of disqualified Secret Gesture from the Grade I $700,000 Beverly D., are appealing the decision. Demoted to third-place for interfering with original third-place finisher Stephanie’s Kitten in the final furlong, the Ralph Beckett trainee was in excellent shape Sunday morning and is under consideration for the Grade I E. P. Taylor Stakes at Woodbine this fall.

race 9 – older horses for $20,000 at 7 furlongs and DANGER BAY won as the favourite for Norseman Racing and Sid Attard. This delicate 6yo rig by Stormy Atlantic posted an 83 Beyer for 1:22.89 and Eurico Rosa da Silva rode.
