It is the time of year when the up and comers, the lightly raced improving horses are going to be the tough ones in the major events at Woodbine (and elsewhere perhaps).
LUCKY LINDY, a maiden winner in June in only his 2nd career start, was bet down to 5-2 second choice in the Grade 3 Ontario Derby on Sunday and he ran to those odds, getting the jump on 2 of th leading 3yo’s of this year, Billy’s Star and breaking Lucky and coasting to a big win.
Robby Albarado rode for trainer Mark Frostad, who conditions for owner/breeder George Strawbridge.

The son of Harlan’s Holiday – celebrate by Rahy was second in the Toronto Cup and third in the Breeders’ Stakes leading into this turf-to-Polytrack outing and he now has 2 wins in 6 races and $150,00 in earnings.

The pace in the race was very slow, set by  Decision Day, and Lindy had a smart, stalking trip not far back. The other big two, Billy’s Star and Breaking Lucky, were side by side heading into the final turn but well off the pace. Both rallied wide but it was too late as Lindy was long gone.

Also on Sunday was the La Lorgnette Stakes and it was good to see that MIDNIGHT MILEY, the first runner at Woodbine for the popular LITTLE RED FEATHER syndicate of California, got a win since moving to Ontario.
The Midnight Lute filly had been 7th in the Alywow Stakes on grass after getting upset in the paddock, was 5th in the Duchess after being hard used on the pace and then one-paced on turf last time.
Trainer Julia Carey was thinking of a non-winners of 2 ‘other than’ for the Kentucky bred but kept her with her own age group and after the filly was supplemented to the race for $2,500, was sharp and ready.
She pressed the pace early in the 1 1/16 mile race and the fractions were also very slow. She put away the other speed runner, Tippany, and then held off the big fave, DON’T LEAVE ME, to win by a long neck under Jesse Campbell.
Little Red Feather is best known for its upset win with Singletary in the Breeders’ Cup Mile in 2004. It is a syndicate that allows people to get involved in racing at a lower level.

Saturday’s featured race, the Overskate Stakes was a super event and GOODOLDHOCKEYGAME was the 3rd of three upset winners of stakes onthe weekend. Frank DiGiulio’s homebred son of  Old Forester was coming off his first win of the season with his 3rd different rider and had yet another change in jocks for the Overskate.
A seven furlong distance lover, the flashy chesnut was ridden by Eurico da Silva who rallied in a crowd to win over Ultimate Destiny and Sniper.
Robert Tiller trains the gelding who his out of Domasca Bella by Domasca Dan. The gelding has won 4 of 10 races and almost $300,000.

More Sunday and Saturday

The Barbara Minshall barn continues to roll as it picked up another win when SLIPPER STILL FITS won the 1st race on Sunday for $19,000 claiming as the heavy favourite. The bay Officer filly was ridden by Luis Contreras. Claimed from the race was the half sister to champion Essence Hit Man, Essences best, for $20,000 by the partnership of Denny Andrews, Sandra Lazaruk and Bob and Roberta Giffin, the same owners of Pender Harbour.

WILD N CLEVER won for the 4th time this year with a class drop to $32,000 in race 3 at 6 1/2 furlongs. The Offlee Wild Ontario bred, Denny Andrews being the breeder in fact, is owned by Tucci Stables and trained by Nick Gonzalez. Emma-Jayne Wilson rode the 4yo to her 8th career win.

PEGGY O, owned and bred by Kingview Farm and trained by Catherine Day Phillips, quickly put a DNF behind her as she won for the 2nd time in her 3rd start in an allowance race. The Philanthropist filly was adding Lasix and David Moran rode.
Moran would later be seen in front of a crowd playing the finale of JOCKEY JOUST with fellow rider Jim McAleney, the trivia game show that appears on Talkin’ Horses (CTV, 9;30 a.m. Saturdays, 11:30 CTV two on Saturdays)

Uri Fishman’s O WANDERLUST led all the way and won the 5th race, a 1 3/8 mile turf allowance under Eurico da Silva. The Ontario bred by Mizzen Mast is trained by John Mattine and it was his 8th career win. He was bred by Hedgestone Management.

And congratulations to trainer Roy Jones who won his first race of the season with ARAZ in the finale, a maiden event for $12,500. The winner, owned by Jasim Areebi caught Me Coh in the final stages for his maiden win in his 11th start. He was bred by Wolfe Creek Stable and is by Mast Track.
Third win for Da Silva

Wagering on Sunday was $3.4 million.

SATURDAY

PURE PURITY was another 2yo winner for the Ralph Biamonte stable as this beginner battled on the pace all the way and won by 1 1/2 lengths under Omar Moreno. She is from the good producing mare Ritta, who has had a pair of 2yo stakes winning foals in Flashy Margaritta and Citius. This filly is by Perfect Soul and was bred by Biamonte.

The clouds came in and the sky darkened and by the time the 5th race was coming onto the track, the rain came down in monsoon-like fashion.
It was too bad as this was a neat allowance race at 6 furlongs for Ontario sired 3 and up and it was impossible to see what was happening during the race. At the finish it was UNDERCOVER CAT who won off the claim for Stephen Chesney and Cory Hoffman and this gelding was the 32nd winner for trainer Kevin Attard. Attard has only had one year when he won more races – 2002 when he won 35.

The well regarded 2yo colt SHAKHIMAT won his debut for owner Dan Gale, who had a big day on Saturday. This colt is from only 2 North American crops of the champion Lonhro (AUS) and almost each one is a runner. This colt is an Ontario bred from Adena Springs and he was a $60,000 2yo purchase. Roger Attfield trains.

In the next race, Gale’s SECRET ACTION, owned in part by trainer Mike Doyle and Richard Hogan, won an allowance race at 9 furlongs that came off the grass. She is an Ontario bred by Tiz Wonderful who was dropping out of 2 stakes races.

Nice to see PASSION FOR ACTION power to an allowance win on the Polytrack in race 9. The race came of the grass and had a small field but this 3yo by Speightstown was one of the top 2yos of 2014 as he won the Cup & Saucer Stakes. This was his 3rd start of 2015 and he was dropping out of the Play the King Stakes for owner and breeder Ben Hutzel.

Race 10 Julia Carey started a big weekend as she sent out a 5yo first time starter, CRAZY JANEY to win her debut for $11,500 claiming in the last race. This Candy Ride 5yo mare is owned by Tom McCrocklin and Discovery racing and Gary Boulanger rode.

LEXIE LOU back on the sidelines

Gary Barber’s LEXIE LOU, the Horse of the Year in 2014 and Queen’s Plate winner, is returning to the Florida farm in Ocala and will try to come back in 2016.

The Sligo Bay 4yo was attempting a comeback last month when she suffered an eye injury that has not healed.

KASSEOPIA on his way to WOODBINE

Team Valor, which recently claimed and retired its former runner GET A GRIP from a claiming race at Woodbine, has purchased impressive maiden winner Kasseopia and is coming to Woodbine for the  Grade 3 Grey Stakes on Oct. 4.

The Charlie Fellowes-trained two-year-old won a maiden race at Kempton by nine lengths and will be trained for Woodbine by Fellowes and then pointed to the Breeders’ Cup.

ONTARIO’S TERI SIMONE AND INDY LEAGUE
FILES FROM BLOOD-HORSE
The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) Sept. 18 announced the recipients of its two non-competition awards, the T.I.P. Thoroughbred of the Year Award and the T.I.P. Young Rider of the Year Award, for 2015.
The young rider award, which recognizes a rider 18 or under who owns or leases a Thoroughbred for use in 4-H, Pony Club or other activities, was split among four riders: Chloe Bellerive, Caroline Kingsbury, Sarah Schultheis, and Teri Simone.
Teri Simone is 17 and from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. She has been riding for more than 11 years.

Simone’s Thoroughbred, Indy League (aka Indy), arrived at her farm as an off-the-track 3-year-old and was offered as a project horse to Simone after he had been given a few months to settle in.

“From my first ride, he was a very special horse. It wasn’t always easy; in fact it was never easy. I grew and learned along with him. He forced me to improve. If I didn’t, I’d learn a lesson the hard way! After a year of work, an offer came from outside the barn. I felt so strongly about Indy that I said to my coach that maybe I could buy him,” Simone said. “After much discussion, I purchased Indy League 50/50 with my mother. I continue to work to cover my portion of board, vet, and farrier bills.”

Simone will use her T.I.P. award funds for competing and college.

Bred in Ontario, Indy League, was unplaced in four starts. He is by Mingun out of Ayanka by Jade Hunter and he was an $85,000 yearling purchase. Indy League is a half brother to the dam of Prince of Wales winner BREAKING LUCKY.
