BEAR STABLES COMPLETE DISPERSAL OF BREEDING STOCK
NOV 21.
Danny Dion’s Bear Stables Ltd. will be selling off all of its breeding stock at the CTHS Winter Mixed sale on Nov. 21 at the Woodbine sales pavilion. There are over 50 broodmares, weanlings and one yearling in the consignment that will be handled by Richard Hogan as agent.
Bear Stables has won multiple Sovereign awards for its horses and for owner of the year since he bought his first horse in 2002. He raced Horse of the Year Fatal Bullet and champion Bear Now plus dozens of other stakes winners.
“There is [no money to be made] selling,” said Dion, who resides in Bonnyville, Alberta. “It’s too hard to get your money back, I’ve been going backwards.”
Dion has entered a large number of his homebred yearlings in recent Woodbine sales, most of them by his own sire Kentucky Bear and from a collection of his mares who have been stabled at Curraghmore Farms in Waterdown.
The racing stable for Dion continues to be a strong presence in Canadian racing, however.
His filly ACADEMIC (Henny Hughes) is the leading contender for Horse of the Year in Canada this season based on wins in the Woodbine Oaks, Canadian Derby and BC Derby. The 3yo filly is expected to race in the upcoming Maple Leaf Stakes at Woodbine at 10 furlongs.

REPORT ON MARES BRED RELEASED BY JOCKEY CLUB…
Excerpt from Thoroughbred Daily news http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/pdf/tdn/tdn151023.pdf on the almost 800 mares bred in Ontario in 2015…
“On the other end of the spectrum, the Ontario breeding
industry has bounced back in a big way. The number of mares
bred in the province fell dramatically when the government
announced the end of the Slots at Racetracks program, but
Ontario political leaders have since agreed to subsidize the
industry for five years, virtually wiping out the losses from the
slots decision. With the industry given a second lease on life, the
number of mares bred in Ontario in 2015 rose to 797, a 26.51%
increase…”

FORT ERIE WRAPS UP 2015
Fort Erie Race Track concluded its 2015 season on Tuesday, October 20th when Rhythm of Rock crossed the wire first under jockey Sheena Ryan to wrap up an extremely successful meet.
Racetrack management is pleased to report a dramatic per day increase of 25% of wagering as well as an increase of 4% of all other revenue which includes food and beverage and program sales. The strong increase indicates not only a boost in on track attendance but also a demand for the Fort Erie product within the racing market.
For the third consecutive season jockey Kirk Johnson led the rider’s colony with 61 wins from 272 starts, good enough for earning of $511,669 and a strong in the money percent of 51%.
The leading female rider was Melanie Pinto with 28 wins from 150 starters. Pinto was also the top female jock in 2014.
Both riders plan to finish off 2015 at Woodbine in Toronto.
Trainer Tony Adamo took top honors in the trainer’s ranks after a powerful season saddling 18 winners from 48 starters.
CONQUEST CURLINATE to Shannondoe
Conquest Curlinate, a multiple graded stakes-placed son of Curlin, will launch his stallion career in 2016 at the Everatt family’s Shannondoe Farm in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada.
An impressive January Maiden Special winner at Oaklawn Park for owner Conquest Stables and trainer Mark Casse, Conquest Curlinate finished a nose shy of victory in his stakes debut, the Grade 3 Illinois Derby. He followed that effort with close runner-up finishes to Madefromlucky in Belmont Park’s Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes and to eventual Classic winner Danish Dynaformer in the Plate Trial over the Woodbine polytrack course.
“Conquest Curlinate was truly one of the best three-year-olds I’ve ever had,” said Casse. “He never ran a bad race and was extremely unlucky not to have won one of those graded races. If not for a freak training accident in early July there’s no doubt in my mind we’d be talking about a Queen’s Plate winner. This horse just had so much untapped talent.”
Conquest Curlinate is a son of the red-hot Smart Strike son Curlin, a top 7 North American sire in 2015. The striking gray/roan colt is one of two graded runners out of Grade 2 winner Higher World, a daughter of Canadian Horse of the Year Peaks and Valleys.
“The good sons of Curlin are starting to come off the track and we couldn’t be happier to have one of them in Conquest Curlinate,” said Shannondoe Farm’s Arika Everatt-Meeuse. “He’s absolutely gorgeous and this is a great opportunity for Canadian breeders. I know we’ll be supporting him just like we did with Society’s Chairman. We’re grateful to Ernie Semersky and Dory Newell for the opportunity to develop a horse like this and we’re excited to be part of the Conquest team.”
Conquest Curlinate will join leading Canadian first crop sire Society’s Chairman at Shannondoe Farm. The Everatt family bred his current leading runner, the multiple stakes winner and Sovereign Award candidate Caren.
Conquest Curlinate will stand for a $5,000 fee (live foal, Canadian funds).
For inquiries or more information please contact Arika at Shannondoe Farm, 519-631-5095.
