WOODBINE WELCOMES LADY CECIL, saddling her last horse

JUDDMONTE FARMS’ WESTERN RESERVE is the final starter for trainer Lady Cecil, who took over the stable from her late husband Sir Henry Cecil. Today’s Autumn Stakes (grade 2) is one of 2 big stakes events today at Woodbine

Cecil bidding to bring down curtain in style

LADY CECIL’S training career began with two winners from her first two runners and she will be hoping it can finish on a high as Western Reserve becomes the final horse she will saddle in tonight’s Grade 2 Autumn Stakes (8.26pm) at Woodbine in Canada.

Her training career may have spanned less than two and a half years, but since taking over Warren Place from her late husband Sir Henry she has managed a pair of Royal Ascot winners and three Group 1 wins courtesy of Noble Mission.

With Sheikh Mohammed acquiring the famous yard, Lady Cecil has decided to retire but yesterday flew to Canada to oversee the final preparations of the Khalid Abdullah-owned Western Reserve. On the three-year-old’s chances, the trainer’s assistant George Scott said: “He’s an improving horse who has really come to himself towards the backend of this year.

“He should be suited by the Polytrack and as long as he travels over well we hope he’s up to this level. He’s by an American stallion [Indian Charlie] and likes real top of the ground, so he’ll transfer to America after this run.”

It is one of the most important and richest races for 2-year-olds in Canada. In a way, it is also the most infamous. The Coronation Futurity, putting Canadian-bred youngsters to the test at 1 1/8 miles on the Polytrack, goes today.

Each year, the Coronation winner is stamped as a key contender for the next year’s Queen’s Plate by the media. Indeed, the Plate is 1 1/4 miles, in July, for Canadian-breds. But it has been many a year since a horse has pulled off that double: Norcliffe in 1975 – 1976.

Horses have come close, somewhat, but more often than not, the transition from 2 to 3 is not done well enough.

Last year’s winner Decision Day has never really been the same since his Coronation win.

This year’s field is a decent group but many of the starters are coming off dismal runs in the Cup and Saucer on turf, a race run on a soft course.

Sam-Son Farms has won the race 5 times and UP WITH THE BIRDS almost doubled up in the Plate.

This year they could have the favourite in BUTTERFLY DANCE, who is a lot tougher than his delicate name may suggest.

The colt was 2nd in the Cup and Saucer, chasing the impressive Conquest Enforcer to the wire after grabbing the lead late in the race. With that winner now sidelined, Butterfly Dancer looks to be tough to beat for the amazing combo of Sam-Son, Malcolm Pierce and Eurico da Silva. The colt’s sire is Awesome Again, who won the Plate.

Other big stables are represented: Chefiswood, Tucci, Augustin and Conquest and the $250,000 should be a cool event.

Champion older horse honours could be decided today in the Autumn Stakes: ARE YOU KIDDING ME has won 2 graded stakes races on 2 different surfaces and is the leading contender over FLORIDA WON, winner of the Presque Isle Mile and Golden Sabre, who beat both those guys in the Durham Cup.
