QUEEN’S PLATE THOUGHTS TURN TO GULFSTREAM
Plate sleeper Sandman starts from post 14 today
Mark Casse chatted with Thoroughblog recently about his Queen’s Plate prospects for 2016 and one of his up-and-comers, CONQUEST SANDMAN, is set to make his 2nd career start at Gulfstream today in race 8.
The Ontario bred by Scat Daddy – Toula by Bold Executive had a wild career debut on Dec. 19 in a 9 furlong grass race when he broke slow,y raced a bit rank into the backstretch, was very wide and still almost won. Bred by Josham Farms Limited, the $80,000 yearling purchase is on the dirt for the 9 furlong race today but post 14 is no gift.
Casse still thinks the world of CONQUEST ENFORCER, the Cup and Saucer Stakes winner by Into Mischief, bred by Ivan Dalos. “He’s doing great. I think he could be any kind. Still not sure when he will return,” said Casse. The colt was said to be injured after the Cup and Saucer.
CONQUEST DADDYO, the Summer Stakes winner is ” doing well, nothing for him on the turf until the last week in February at GP. I’m think about trying him on the dirt,” said Casse.
CONQUEST TWISTER is at Oaklawn and casse suspects he may be a sprinter.
BELIVEAU has only returned to training after a lengthy layoff in which he was seriously ill.
Also today at Gulfstream, trainer TODD PLETCHER sends out Queen’s Plate hopeful BATTERY, a son of Bernardini – Flawless Diamond by Saint Ballado in race 9, an allowance/optional claiming race at 1 1/16 miles on the dirt. Battery, owned by Harrel Ventures LLC won his maiden at Gulfstream West on Nov. 21 with a 73 Beyer Figure for 1:47 3/5 for 1 1/16 miles. Battery is the 5-2 early favourite in the 9 horse field.
TODAY’S HIGHLIGHTS –
CALIFORNIA CHROME! If you saw his workout on YouTube, 1:10 for 6 furlongs, you will know he is going to be tough to beat in his scheduled return in the San Pasqual at Santa today. The weather may not be great, however, so let’s hope the Derby/Preakness winner and superstar has a safe journey.
Woodbine trainer JOSIE CARROLL starts 2 horses in the Grade 2 Ft. Lauderdale Handicap at Gulfstream today, a 1 1/16 mile turf event.
Canadian champion LUKES ALLEY, the champion older horse of 2014 is in post 4 for his 3rd try on grass and MONEY TALKER is in post 21 for his first race since he was 2nd in the Labeeb Stakes.
Also in this good field is Canadian-bred HEART TO HEART, winner of the Grade 3 River City Handicap at Churchill Downs on Nov. 26 in his last start and a tough speed runner owned by Terry Hamilton. Brian Lynch trains.

At Charles Town, VOLSTEAD was a winner for Layne Giliforte, a longtime trainer at Woodbine and Fort Erie (and he was the groom of the great Izvestia). Volstead is an Ontario bred by Rebellion (GB) bred by Jamie Begg. The gelding led all the way through 7 furlongs in the $5,000 claiming event.
At Penn National, SCOTT FAIRLIE continues his roll as 4-5 shot RITZY LASS, an Ontario bred by Old Forester – Ritzy Dame by Distored Humor, led all the way and won a 1 mile race for $12,500 claiming on Thursday. The 4-year-old filly was claimed by Premier Stable and Michelle Rainford rode.
