ALL AMERICAN..PHAROAH!
One of the greatest racehorses we will see in our lifetime was honoured at the Eclipse Awards Saturday night in Florida. AMERICAN PHAROAH and his human team swept the awards (jockey Victor Espinoza was 2nd to Javier Castellano) at the glittery event.
The Pharoah was a unanimous HORSE OF THE YEAR through the voting.
WOODBINE’S LEADING TRAINER MARK CASSE celebrated as the filly he trains for Robter Masterson, TEPIN, was named champion turf female.
CANADIAN J. PAUL REDDAM also celebrated as NYQUIST was named champion 2-year-old male. Nyquist is unbeaten and heading to the Kentucky Derby in May as one of the favourites.
CATCH A GLIMPSE, the Canadian owned winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly Turf, actually received one vote for Champion 2-year-old filly over Songbird.

KARIBU GARDENS CHARGES TO ALLOWANCE WIN
The 6-year-old KARIBU GARDENS, a Kentucky bred owned and bred by Eugene Melnyk, had a fun time returning to the Gulfstream turf on Saturday as he powered to a 3 length win under Joe Bravo at 5-2.
The son of Flower Alley is trained by Josie Carroll, who is having a solid run at the meeting currently. Melnyk’s champion LUKES ALLEY was recently 2nd in a stakes race and his promising maiden AMEN ALLEY was also recently second.
Karibu Gardens ran 1 1/16 miles on good turf in 1:45.15, translated by DRF into
In the SUNSHINE MILLIONS TURF, REPORTING STAR, one of Canada’s top turf runners, led late in the 1 1/16 mile event worth $150,000 but was caught near the wire by Manchurian High. The Pat Parente gelding is owned by Copper Water Thoroughbreds and he was coming off a win in the El Prado Stakes.
JOHN ATTO – 70
A passionate horse racing lover who stepped up and sponsored Woodbine’s one-ile grass event inagurated in 1999 – 2006 (the Atto Mile, now Woodbine Mile), John Atto has pased away at the age of 70.
Atto left the racing wars for a few years before returning in the last 2 season, racing horses such as Crushin Hard with trainer Sandy McPherson.

Peacefully surrounded by family, John passed away on January 12, 2016.
Devoted father to son Robert Atto and his wife Jacqueline. Loving Grandpa to his four grandchildren, Brody, Victoria, Adryanna and Jadyn. Cherished brother to Nancy (Tom) Leathong, Brenda (Peter) Vrba, Jill (Mark) Deakin and Randy (Carolyn) Atto. John is the beloved son of Melva and John (deceased) Atto. He will also be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Throughout his life, John was proud of the company he built, Atto and Associates Insurance Brokers and his passion for horses and thoroughbred racing.
