becomes millionaire too!
Canadian-owned HORSE OF THE YEAR CATCH A GLIMPSE (8 to 5 yesterday) continues to power her way through big grass wins for Mike Ambler, Jeff Begg, Greg Lang and Gary Barber, finding good spots and big money in the process. The City Zip gal snuck off to Penn National last evening and won the Grade 3 Penn Mile, worth a whopping $500,000. Trained by Mark Casse and stabled in Kentucky with Norm Casse, the chestnut filly ran 1 mile in 1:34.89 – good for a career best 92 Beyer Speed Figure according to Daily Racing Form.
BY JERRY REIGEL – THE DAILY NEWS – GRANTVILLE – Now you see her, now you don’t. The aptly named filly, Catch A Glimpse, came to Penn National Race Track Saturday night for the fourth running of the Grade III $500,000 Penn Mile on the turf.
The speedy 3-year old daughter of City Zip came into the race owning a six-race win streak, the last five of which came with Kentucky-based jockey Florent Geroux in the saddle. In the middle of the streak was a win last fall in the $1 million Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Filly Turf Stake at Keeneland.
And, oh yeah, she was the Canadian Horse of the Year in 2015.

(some files from Woodbine media)
The Very Dry Stable’s RIVER MAID is one of the toughest fillies on the track – she loves a stretch battle and if she is in the hunt, look out, she’s tough to beat.
The 4yo daughter of Where’s the Ring – Rivermaid Dancing by Riverman wore down a game and determined She’s Explosive in the final jump to win a thrilling edition of Saturday’s co-featured $125,400 Ballade Stakes, at Woodbine.
Trained by Robert Tiller arrived at the six furlong Tapeta sprint on a three-race win streak. The filly completed her three-year-old campaign with an optional claiming score going seven furlongs over the Woodbine main, and carried that form into 2016 winning a five furlong allowance sprint and a 6 1/2-furlong optional claiming event.
Sent to post at odds of 10-1 in the Ballade, River Maid, with Gary Boulanger taking over as Patrick Husbands rode favoured Galina Point, stalked in fifth position as Silent Treat and She’s Explosive battled through splits of :23.23 and :46.03. She’s Explosive, with Luis Contreras up, took command through the turn as River Maid and Scotty’s Model, under Alan Garcia, launched their bid. The rallying pair raced in tight quarters through the turn with She’s Explosive looking home and cooled out, but a resurgent River Maid found another gear to get up for a nose score. River Maid covered six furlongs in 1:11.46, a fast time for the day and an 88 Beyer Figure.
“She didn’t get away cleanly today, but I was always in good position. She gives you a good feeling and lets you know there’s horse there,” said Boulanger. “When Alan (Garcia, Scotty’s Model) came to my outside it kind of intimidated her a bit, but she’s just all heart and class. She gritted down and dug in and said I’m going to get this one.”
Tiller owns the most Ballade victories of any trainer with four. He previously took the event with Anywhere (2012) and Brass in Pocket (2003, 2004). The Hall of Fame conditioner was pleased with the game effort by River Maid.
“She’s a real sweetheart. We stopped her off a win last year which is very hard to do for any trainer. She just wasn’t right, had some muscle issues, so we gave her the rest of the year off,” said Tiller. “If I had a dozen like her the game would be easy. When that horse (Scotty’s Model) came to the outside of her, I thought we couldn’t win it but I knew she had heart and she dug in. Gary rode a great race.”
River Maid, bred in Ontario by Jay Cochlin, banked $75,000 in victory while improving her record to 6-2-1 from 10 starts.
She paid $22.70, $8.50 and $4.80, combining with She’s Explosive ($14.60, $6.30) for a $258.70 (7-8) exactor. A 7-8-10 triactor (Scotty’s Model, $4 to show) was worth $1116.30, while a $1 Superfecta [7-8-10-1 (Quidi Vidi)] came back $4991.90. Old Valyria, Letter Fly and Tahnee were scratched.
In the Sweet Briar Too Stakes it was Stronach Stables’ homebred Charming Delilah who rallied up the rail to capture the $116,800 event.
Trained by Sid Attard, the five-year-old Stephen Got Even bay arrived at the seven furlong Tapeta sprint from an even fifth-place run in the Grade III Hendrie Stakes.
Clarkston Hope and Green Doctor contested the early Sweet Briar Too pace through splits of :23.03 and :46.58 with Chic Thrill, the 8-5 mutuel favourite, tracking their early foot.
Green Doctor took the field into the turn as Sam-Son Farm homebred Chic Thrill dug in and launched a menacing run. However, Charming Delilah, patiently handled by Emma-Jayne Wilson from fourth position along the rail, found racing room as the field turned for home and Wilson urged the mare through for a comfortable 1/2-length score. Chic Thrill stayed on for place by ¾-lengths over Midnight Miley. Charming Delilah covered seven furlongs in 1:25.64.
Wilson believes the mare had a good excuse for her rare off-the-board effort in the Hendrie.
“She broke a little funny last time, threw her head a touch, and hit her head on the side of the gate,” said Wilson. “It took her a minute to recover. She didn’t run her best race but she gave a solid effort despite the adversity and came back to run very well today.”
Wilson, who won the 2015 edition of the Sweet Briar Too with Endless Light, was pleased with the trip she engineered on Saturday for Charming Delilah.
“I was travelling really handy in behind. I had a big opening so there wasn’t too much of the kickback,” said Wilson. “She was pretty sharp in post parade so I knew she would be travelling along really well. The inside opened up easy enough and she dug in hard. It was a hard battle to get by the Sam-Son horse (Chic Thrill) but she fought hard, as she always does, and prevailed.”
Charming Delilah, bred in Ontario by Adena Springs, banked $72,000 in victory while improving her record to 4-6-1 from 12 starts.
She paid $9.70, $4 and $3.20, combining with Chic Thrill ($2.80, $2.40) for a $32.40 (2-6) exactor. A 2-6-4 triactor (Midnight Miley, $3.90 to show) was worth $142.90, while a $1 Superfecta [2-6-4-7 (Yodel)] came back $180.20.
Race 1 – Debut winner Leo from Heaven, a Walnut Ridge homebred with that disinct white nose, was heavily favoured in this allowance race with just 6 entrants. The colt had run hard in that debut, battling on the pace althe way to win by a nose and was adding Lasix for this longer race at 7 furlongs. Fans really pounded him down, to 1 to 5, which was surprising and he after being quite rank and dueling with Moon Doogie, he faded. Rallying from the rail to the outside in the last jump was MISTER NADA, a 17 to 1 shot picked on top by Thoroughblog. This dark bay by Philanthropist – Nadawat by Kingmambo had been 3rd and 4th in his 2 sprints this year before trying a route race which did not go well. His Beyers in the sprints of 64 and 65 were well matched for this race. Gary Boulanger rode the winner for Linmac Farm adn trainer Dave Cotey. Sherry McLean bred the gelding.
Race 2- Stronach Stables’ MEADOW ROSE, making her 2nd career start and first at a route distance from a 6 furlong sprint, won this maiden race for trainer Nick Gonzalez. Race 3- Two-year-old fillys at 4 1/2 furlongs and all are first-time starters but one, A Pic by Mrwill, was hammered down to 7 to 5. The Kentucky Bear filly, from the good 2yo stable of JOhn Ross, had some good workout times but the race wad ominated by GREEN FREEDOM a Not Bourbon filly owned by Dura Racing and Mike Doyle. This filly was bought for about $7,000 as a yearling from Charles Fipke at the local yearling sale and she ran fast with a long, eager stride, stopping the clock in 53.14 for 4 1/2 furlongs and earning a 63 beyer Figure. Luis Contreras rode.
Race 4 – In start number 28, GIBBONS GAMBLER finally won his maiden and it was quite a popular win as he got a rousing call from track announcer Robert Geller,. This 5yo gelding by Silent Name (Jpn) – Catch a Fire by Indian Groom had been 2nd or 3rd in 12 of his previous race including a nose loss in his season debut. Owned by Stephen Chesney and Cory Hoffman and trained By Kevin Attard the gelding tracked speedy Into the Mystic all the way and wore than rival down in the last furlong under Eurico da Silva. His earnings? He is now at $92,000. Watch for him next time out too, many times these types come right back and win once they get that winning feeling.
in that race, the favourite, Equity Share, a well bred Super Saver gelding who dwelt in his career debut on April 17 propped out of the gate and his jockey Luis Contreras and they stood still. The gelding did not have a publichsed workout from the gate since his incident in his debut.
Race 6- an allowance/optional claiming race was won from off the pace by Charles Fipke’s D’ORO PARADISE under jockey Alan Garcia who had a shrewed ride to keep things tight on his rivals including the troubled Daddy’s Great Bay. D’Oro Paradise is a Kentucky bred by Madaglia d’Oro out of a Mr Prospector mare and Roger Attfield trains. It was her 2nd win of the season and she was 3rd in her latest race to Woodbien Oaks contender Dublin Diva.
The race was shortened by the scratching of probable favourite Curlin Kisses as well as Motown Lady.
Race 7 – a 6 1/2 furlong turf allowance for Ontario sired older horses was won by NO RISK NO REWARD, who was making his 26th career start but coming off a good effort in his latest at 1 mile on turf with a 75 Beyer Figure. Shortening up for this race, the Lorna Carston trainee raced off the pace battle between Virtadero and Butiloves yababe and then angled out to storm to a 3 length win in 1:15.59 – a 77 Beyer Figure.
The woners of this 5yo by Atlas Shrugs are his breeders, Melvin Russell and Darlene Seligman.
Race 9 – Race riding! Favoured GOODYEARFORROSES, the latest Euro-shipper for trainer Roger Attfield, came from off the pace, kept things tight in the stretch for a very troubled Mozambique Gold, and won this allowance race by a neck in his Woodbine debut. The daughter of Azamour (Ire) is out of a Galileo mare. There was a Galileo mare in the race too – Belle de Nuit, who set the pace.
Goodyearforroses was ridden by Alan Garcia who has ridden al itany of winners for the Attfield stable.
Race 10 – Followers of Thoroughblog will know that this corner picked MAXIMUM ENTROPY in her season debut when she was 7th in a fastrace won by Madison Way. The Mark Mesic trainee was back for this maiden alloance at 6 furlongs at 30 to 1 and Thorougbolg shied a bit, picked her 4th and then watched her rally to win from ebhind a hot pace. This is a Court Vision filly out of Dicey Girl by Yonaguska, owned and bred bY Bay Ridhe Orchards Ltd., Jeff Alderson rode as Steve Bahen booked off. The winner came up the rail to catch speedster Beauty Phil, making her career debut. The time was 1:14.13, again on a very slow surface.
