** This weekend – PATRICK HUSBANDS only needs 1 win to get to 3,000 and he has some good mounts on today’s card at Woodbine.

How many jockeys have won 3,000 races or more? You will find the answer somewhere on this post!

Extremely hot and sunny weather on tap for the racing this weekend, the Achievement Stakes is a wonderful betting event today (Go Bro will be scratched) – don’t forget to check out the picks on Thoroughblog too!

QUEEN’S PLATE

LEAVEM IN MALIBU had his big workout for the Plate Saturday morning. Trainer Mark Casse confirmed that the colt will be the only strater for his stable in this year’s 1 1/4 Canadian classic.

The most dramatic change in the picture for the 157th Queen’s Plate is that AMIS GIZMO, a son of Ontario stallion Giant Gizmo, is now the strong favourite based on his handy win in the Plate Trial over the previous favourite SHAKHIMAT.

The style that this handsome chestnut colt used to win the Trial was perfect and, considering most of the horses still on the Plate trail have been speed types to this point makes the Gizmo even easier to like.

Will Neshama or Cheburashka’s interests put up $25,000 to supplement to the $1 million race?

The former, the Oaks winner who held off Amis Gizmo’s stablemate Gamble’s Ghost to win the big race for fillies, had a powerful run but one should note that Gamble’s Ghost had a bad trip and was a jump away from winning.

Looks very good for Ivan Dalos to get his first Plate win.

Race 1- FROSTY VIXEN, an ONtario sired gal by War Cry – Regal ‘n Bold by Bold Executive, won this $20,000 claiming race in her first start for claiming since last fall. The Tucci Stables bay was ridden by Emma-Jayne Wilson who kept the filly close to the early pace along the isnide and then the pair barged through on their way to victory. It was the 2nd win for this 3yo filly who is trained by Nick Gonzalez.

Race 2- Tucci Stables tried to double up with speedy First Girl in this 1 1/8 mile turf race for $40,000 claiming fillies but that one went too fast on the lead and it was the Windhaven filly LAMORIELLO, who came from far back under Patrick Husbands to win her grass debut under Patrick Husbands. Mike Doyle trains and co-owns this daughter of Eskendereya who is 2 for 3 this year.

Race 3- a 1 1/8 miles Ontario sired allowance race and nobody wanted the lead early in this race so GUITAR GEORGE,a plucky bay gelding, went to the front under Gary Boulanger and fended off Trial Lawyer to win in his 3rd start of the year. He was moving from turf to Tapeta and was 2nd time with blinkers (the first blinkers race was on turf); Bob Tiller trains for Frank DiGiulio Jr and this son of Not Bourbon out of Fleet Kris by Northern Afleet was bred by Frank Mermenstein.

Race 4 – on the grass for a $40,00 claiming race and if you have been following and picking/betting WEALTHY SHIPMAN this season like Thoroughblog has (2nd at 65 to 1 two starters ago, 2nd in her latest at 3 to 1) then you could have been interested in her on turf and with 1st time Lasix; at 6 to 1 she benefitted from a nice rail ,stalking trip under replacement rider Steve Bahen and rallied to win for Dave Cotey and partners. It was her 2nd win in her 15 career start.

race 5- a major roll continues for the hot Kevin Attard barn and he probbaly could have been 1-2 in this race wit his 2 runners. I CANNOT FIND IT rode the inside and rail before angling out 2 wide into the stretch to win this 7 furlong $10,000 claiming race for fillies and mares (non wnners of 2) at 26 to 1. The Where’s the Ring – Wild Aly by Alydeed filly was down from $20,000 claiming in her first race and turned tings around in a big way with Gerry Olguin as her new rider. Elizabeth and Gordon Lickrish own and bred the filly.
Attard’s other starter, Perfect Speed, had a troubled trip but closed fast for 4th.

race 6 – STYLISH REFLECTION and Luis Contreras won this maiden race for $12,500 handily after stalking form the rail early in the 7 frulong dash. The Bruce Lunsford bay, a daughter of Lookin at Lucky, dropped from $25,000 claiming for her 2nd start of the meeting. Barbara Minshall trains.

race 7 – HEY BIG MAN won this $10,000 claiming race at 1 1/16 miles with a gritty battle to the wire to edge UNCORKED SPIRIT. The winner wastaking his 2nd victory of the season in 5 races for Alberta and Tom Bland. This is an ONtario bred by Big Brown and Jim McAleney picked up the mount from Sunny Singh who was not riding.

The ifnal race of the night was a maiden claiming route race for $8,000 and KNOIGHT DIPPER, a chestnut with a big white blaze who runs with his head low to the ground, won his maiden in his 11th career start.
It was the first win of the season at Woodbine for owner/trainer Debra Rombis. Kirk Johnson had the gelding by Trajectory close to the quick pace and all he had to do was hold off everyone’s favourite maiden CHARLIE’S WISDOM, who finished 2nd for the 8th time in this race in his 24 start. Charlie’s Wisom has almost $100,000 in earnings from his 16 top three placings.
