When Joe Stritzel had a horse in a race at Woodbine you knew it. Not just because his runners were often prominent in their races but because Joe would bet his charges with great enthusiasm, and early.

Joe loved to watch his races race and he loved to place a bob or two as well. Many times his starters would open up as heavy favourites after he viisted the mutuel teller, sometimes he bet friends’ horses with the same excitement.  His black and red silks were very familiar and he bought and bred horses. His farm in Nobleton, ON hosted a huge party for German Canadians each summer (photo above is from last year’s party).

Stritzl campaigned stakes winners Spin the King and Dawson’s Legacy, who was Canada’s champion 2-year-old male in 1997, the year he finished second in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Dawson’s Legacy won the Grade 3 Sky Classic and the Grade 3 Play the King in 1999.

Visitation will be at the Ward Funeral Home at 4671 Hwy. 7 in Woodbridge, Ontario, on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Peter’s Church at 100 Bainbridge Ave. in Woodbridge on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Entombment will follow at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery at 7300 Hwy. 27 in Woodbridge.

Donations can be made to the cardiac department at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.

 

SARATOGA YEARLING SALE – CANADIAN BREDS BOUGHT AND SOLD

ZAYAT STABLE’S purchased a Street Sense – Flawless Diamond filly from David Anderson for $325,000 on the first night of the Saratoga yearling sale Tuesday in Saratoga Springs NY.
The filly, an Ontario bred, is half sister to stakes winner Blue Heart, recent winner Battery and the promising, unstarted filly Financial Recovery, who is expected to compete in this weekend’s Shady Well Stakes.
BRUCE LUNSFORD, who races horses at Woodbine with trainer Barb Minshall, purchased an Ontario bred filly from the first crop of the exciting Grade 1 winner Violence (Medaglia D’Oro) out of Parisia from Josham Farms through Hill ‘n’ Dale sales Agency. The filly is a three-quarter sister to major Canadian winner Tasty Temptation.
Bernard McCormack’s Cara Bloodstock sold a Blame colt from Endless Journey (photo) for $250,000 to Blandford Bloodstock and a $100,000 Orb colt to Silver Creek Thoroughbreds.
There are 2 Ontario breds up for sale this evening – Hips 186 and 225.
The first evening of the fancy sale saw a slight average price drop, an increase in media and a 50% increase in horses bought back.
