IT’S SWEATER WEATHER
The temperature dropped on the weekend but SWEATER WEATHER is heating up. The 5-year-old Milwaukee Brew mare from the mare Susur by Cape Canaveral won her 2nd straight stakes race with a last-to-first rally over the very slow Tapeta surface on Sunday. Trained by Robert Tiller and bred by Osprey Stable, Sweater Weather was ridden by Jermaine Bridgmohan. She had won the Algoma Stakes in her previous start. After 4 races last year and $13,000 in earnings Sweater Weather has won over $156,000 this year.
She has 6 wins from 19 races and career earnings of about $470,000.
JUROJIN also rallied from well off the pace and he won the $125,000 Kingarvie Stakes for Ontario sired 2-year-olds under Luis Contreras.
The Giant Gizmo gelding, bred and co-owned by Sandra Bird and also owned by 5-year-old Sarah Ladouceur, won his debut impressively but had been 7th in the Victoria and 8th on turf in the Vandal. He was 2nd time blinkers and moving out to 1 1/16 miles for the first time for trainer Harold Ladouceur.
The Ladouceur family, of course, raced Paladin Bay, one of the top 2 and 3-year-old fillies in Canada recently.
Jurojin was touted as a stakes contender on TALKIN HORSES, TV show on CTV – watch the interview with his owners and meet the gelding himself here:
More weekend winners – CONGRATULATIONS to Joanna Iglar who won her first race of 2016 when ROYAL INTRIGUE won race 1 on Sunday, a $40,00 claiming race. Ridden by Juan Crawfrd, Royal Intrigure was bred by Iglar and he was making his 2nd start off a short layoff.
Also winning for the first time at Woodbine this year was trainer PAULA LOESCHER who sent out the 5-year-old mare WORLD IN SILENCE to win a clockwise grass race for maidens, claiming $16,000.
World in Silence was coming off four consecutive 2nd place finishes but Chris Griffith steered her to her maiden win in her 10th career outing. She is owned by Castle Peak Farms’ Kanny Ng.
And ALBERT SCHEMBRI won his first race of the year with his only starter he has had – KAILI’S BIG BOY, a Bold Executive 4yo gelding who won his maiden in race 7 at 6 furlongs on turf. The $5,000 yearling purchase, bred by Paradox Farm, was making his 12th career start and he led all the way to win the maiden allowance under Simon Husbands.
CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL NEWS
DA BIG HOSS is coming!
Reports from Daily racing Form say that the really cool fellow DA BIG HOSS will be competing in the Canadian International at Woodbine on Oct. 16 as a prep for the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Owned by Skychai racing and trained by Mike Maker (he won the Queen’s Plate this year), DA BIG HOSS has won 4 straight events, taken 9 of his last 15 races dating back to early 2015 and he comes off a win in the Ky Turf Cup (G3) with a 9 Beyer Figure.
He posted three consecutive Beyer Figures of 100 in his 2 previous wins which came at 2 miles, 1 11/16 miles and 1 1/2 miles (Belmont Gold Cup, American St leger and Elkhorn).
THE PIZZA MAN, winner of the Northern Dancer Stakes at Woodbine, may not come after all and there are hopes that DARTMOUTH, owned by THE QUEEN and trained by SIR MICHAEL STOUTE (he has won the last 2 Canadian Internationals) will visit as well.
