CUP FRENZY!

185 horses were pre-entered for the Nov. 4 and 5 Breeders’ Cup races at Santa Anita and now the serious handicapping and debating begins.

Woodbine horses include Canadian-bred CALGARY CAT and Bear Stables’ NOHOLDINGBACK BEAR as well as Canadian-bred CHANNEL MAKER, the first Breeders’ Cup starter for relative newcomer Joey Gee Stables (Joe Guerreri) who sold a piece of his colt to Gary Barber recently.

GOLDEN HAWK, Grey Stakes winner

ghawk

Sad news coming out of the Live Oak Plantation stable of Charlotte Weber. Her fabulous colt GOLDEN HAWK, winner of the Grade 3 Grey Stakes by more than 5  lengths and scheduled to be entered in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile/Juvenile Turf, suffered a breakdown in a workout on Monday Oct. 24 at Churchill Downs.

Patrick Husbands went to Churchill to work the son of Tapit, owned and bred by Weber but the colt broke down during the prep.

Golden Hawk won his debut on turf at Woodbine before his Grey Stakes romp.

WOODBINE WEDNESDAY – SOME WILD WINNERS

There was a mixed bag of winners on a very cold night at Woodbine, Wed. Oct. 26 and some exciting races for some smaller stables.

DUPES, the hero of the Puss N Boots Stakes this year at Fort Erie, was 41 to 1 in a small filed in race 2, a starter allowance at 1 1/8 miles but that did not bther Connie Patton’s 7-year-old gelding. He battled heavily favoured Smooth Stone to the wire to win by ahead, his 3rd score of the season. Kirk Johnson rode for trainer Kathy Patton.

Race 3 was won by first-time starter GATOR SPY (Pollard’s Vision), a New York-bred first time starter for trainer/co-owner Renee Kierans, who had this 2-year-old very ready to win from off the pace at 6 furlongs. Ridden by Jeff Alderson (he had 2 wins on the evening), Gator Spy won a length in 1:11.36, good for a 61 Beyer Figure.
The youngster was the first winner for Kierans at the meeting and the gelding is co-owned by Stabdardbred trainer Ben Wallace and partners.

Trainer Mike Doyle horses ran 1-2 in race 4 and both were claimed. Hey Bear beat bear Skinned and they were claimed by Colebrook farms and trainer BIll Tharrenos and the latter claimed by trainer Jim Ensom.

Cary Brooks won his first race of the Woodbine meeting when ROCK RIVER crushed a field of maidens for $8,000. The 3-year-old was making his 7th career start for Brooks, who co-owns the son of Bob and John. Sheena Ryan had a great ride on the gelding. Ryan’s former regular mount, Cat Zapper, had a horrendous journey in the race with tough traffic woes and shouldbe tabbed for next time.

Trainer Norm McKnight continued his incredible season with 2 more winners to get to 46 victories at the meeting.
Rafael Hernandez had a triple.
