CTHS ONTARIO MIXED SALE SATURDAY

Shopping for a mare for the 2018 breeding season? Or a weanling to raise or re-sell?
The Ontario division of the CTHS offers up over 90 horses at the annual Mixed Sale on Saturday at the Woodbine sales pavilion beginning at 6 p.m.
The catalogue is solid with a lot of broodmares loaded with black type pedigree in foal to some of the top sires.
Shannondoe Farms of Jim and Janeane Everatt and Arika Everatt-Meeuse had more than 20 mares in the auction plus another dozen weanlings, showcasing their stallions Society’s Chairman, Conquest Curlinate and newcomer Dynamic Sky.
“It’s all part of a long term plan,” said Everatt-Meeuse. “We built up a number of good useful mares to support our studs with and now we hope to give breeders up here an oportunity to buy decent mares that should represent very good value up here Maybe they come back to our boys to be bred again this year.”
Sherry McLean’s NORTHERN DAWN offers half a dozen mares in foal to its new stallion RELOAD, a half brother to Philanthropist and a graded stakes winner who handled various distances and surfaces.
There are daughters of Giant’s Causeway and English Channel in the Northern Dawn consignment.
Hill ‘n’ Dales Farms, agent offers a weanling by top US sire Sky Mesa.

SIGNATURE RED MOVES TO ADENA, PASSION FOR ACTION ENTERS STUD
Canada’s leading 2nd crop sire SIGNATURE RED, who led all freshman sires in the country in 2016, has been relocated from Colebrook Farms to Adena Springs for 2018. The son of Bernstein, a multiple stakes winning sprinter, has had a big season again with top runners such as the unbeaten 2-year-old LATONKA, winner of the Bull Page Stakes.
The stallions average earnings per starter early in his career is over $43,000.
Colebrook welcomes a new stallion for 2018 in PASSION FOR ACTION, a mulitple stakes winning son of Speightstown from the stakes winning mare Maritime Passion by Stomy Atlantic.
Owned and bred by Ben Hutzel, Passion for Action was one of 2016’s best Canadian racehorses and a Sovereign Award finalist for Champion Male Sprinter
His wins included the Grade 2 Highlander S. ( 6 fur. on turf), Grade 3 Vigil S. (7 fur. Tapeta), Jacques Cartier S. (6 fur. Tapeta) and he was 2nd in Grade 2 Connaught Cup S. (7 fur. turf) and Grade 2 Grade 2 Kennedy Road S.
As a 2-year-old, Passion for Action won the prestigious Cup & Saucer S. by more than 3 lengths at 1 1/16 miles on turf
His sire SPEIGHTSTOWN, one of the leading sires in North America,has 85 career black-type winners, 13 black-type winners in 2017 and progeny earnings of $7.2 million. Stands for $100,000 (US) fee.

The race for Champion Three-Year-Old Male in Canada does not have a standout leader but CHIEF KNOW IT ALL, winner of the Canadian and BC Derbys had a super run in the $200,000 Zia Park Derby n Wednesday night at Zia Park to bolster his record.
The son of Flashy Bull made a wide move at the leaders while wide and was just 2 3/4 lengths behind Cedartown at the finish. The winner is owned by Godolphin.
Out on California, CHANNEL MAKER, the Breeders’ Stakes winner who was 2nd in the Marine Stakes and 4th in the Plate, is entered in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby. The son of English Channel, so-owned by Joe Guerrieri’s Joy G Thoroughbreds, is coming off a 4th in the Grade 2 Twilight Derby and he is certainly a major contender for the Sovereign Award.

CONTRERAS DECISION
Jockey Luis Contreras was handed down a $1,000 fine by AGCO for failing to ride out a race, the 6th event on Nov. 1 at Woodbine. Riding Leaven in Malibu, Contreras checked the colt in deep stretch when they lost their path but when the colt got his stride back, Contreras did not finishing riding the horse to the finish line.
