Once again, the coverage from Breakfast at the Breeders’ Cup presented by TVG has been outstanding with workouts and interviews.
On Wednesday morning the Europeans started to do on-track work, horses tried the grass and dozens schooled in the paddock. Workouts and gallops are one thing, however, and how the horses match up in their races and what type of trips they get will determine the winners in the 14 races.

Wednesday morning:
EL TORMENTA, one of 2 Canadian-breds in the Cup races, schooled in the Santa Anita paddock on Wednesday morning with trainer Gail Cox.
TRES FLUORS – Breeders’ Cup Mile, European galloped on the grass with a pony as he was really looking around in his first trip to North America.
DECORATED INVADER – He is one of several ‘buzz’ horses this week. The 2-year-old colt won the Grade 1 Summer Stakes at Woodbine on yielding grass and he has reportedly trained very well in New York. He will be first time with Lasix on Friday for the Juvenile Turf. His trainer Christophe Clement has never won a Breeders’ Cup race.
SHADN – an Irish bred 2-year-old filly by No Nay Never, she zipped around the cones on the grass and looked super and she has a smoother stride. She won a Group 2 in France on soft turf in her most recent race and Jamie Spencer will ride.
FANNY LOGAN and CASTLE LADY caught the eye as they prepare for the Filly and Mare Turf.
MATERA SKY, from Japan, had a strong gallop through the stretch on the main track and was the wrong lead all the way. It has been a while since the Speightstown horse has won.
BRICKS AND MORTAR, unbeaten this year on turf and trying the 12 furlong Turf for trainer Chad Brown, had a big gallop on the dirt. This guy plus MIDNIGHT BISOU (Distaff, also unbeaten this year) and the top two leading contenders for American Horse of the Year.
MR. MONEY – Dirt Mile, galloped like a monster on Wednesday, was tough on rider

Could Santa Anita switch back to a synthetic surface?
Media were invited to a panel discussion at Santa Anita on Wednesday to discuss safety protocols at the Breeders’ Cup.
The California wildfires and air quality is being monitored and Dr. Rick Arthur said the fires are “downwind” air quality has not been affected.
The Breeders’ Cup has a team of 20 veterinarians in conjunction with Santa Anita with another 30 vets that will be located throughout the track during racing.
Out-of-competition testing has been completed on over 90% of the entrants for the two-day Championships and testing will continue.
In addition to safety measures being discussed, vets on the panel mentioned that bringing back a synthetic surface to Santa Anita was “not off the table.”
