While this June’s CTHS Ontario Awards Dinner honouring the breeders of Ontario-bred stakes winners of 2019 has been cancelled this year, the event will return in 2021 and celebrate both 2019 and 2020 breeders of Ontario-bred stakes winners. The annual Leading Breeder and Mint Julep Cup will also be presented at the 2021 ceremony.
There were 35 individual breeders of 52 Ontario-bred stakes winners in Canada and throughout the world in 2019, many of the graded stakes winners proving that an Ontario-bred horse can compete at the highest levels.
Sam-Son Farms, located in Milton, ON, bred four stakes winners of five events last year including EL TORMENTA, winner of the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile and CLEOPATRA’S STRIKE, who took the Grade 2 John Henry Turf Championship at Santa Anita. Owned and operated by Rick Balaz and family, Kim and Mark Samuel, Sam-Son also bred 2019 Woodbine Oaks winner DESERT RIDE.
Ron Clarkson had his biggest year as a breeder in 2019 as ONE BAD BOY won the prestigious Queen’s Plate for Greg Hall, SayJay Racing and Brooke Hubbard. The older half sister of One Bay Boy, MS BAD BEHAVIOR, was a Grade 2 winner in 2019 while the 2-year-old half sister to that pair, BLESSED TRULY won the Muskoka Stakes at Woodbine. All three runners are from Clarkson’s star mare Cumulonimble.
David Anderson’s Anderson Farms bred three individual stakes winners in 2019 including the impressive California-based mare HARD NOT TO LOVE, winner of the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita and Coronation Futurity winner HALO AGAIN.
John Carey is the breeder of superstar PINK LLOYD, once again Canada’s top sprinter. The amazing gelding by Old Forester won six stakes races in 2019 and is gearing up for another campaign in 2020. Carey. who operates T.C. Westmeath Stud in Shelburne, also bred stakes winner Souper Success.
TONE BROKE, winner of two-thirds of Canada’s Triple Crown, the Prince of Wales Stakes and Breeders’ Stakes, was bred by Sean and Dorothy Fitzhenry and the now 4-year-old colt was raced by L & N Racing Stable.
Mike Nosowenko and son Nick Nosowenko, who also trains, bred and raced multiple stakes winner COOLER MIKE, one of the season’s top older horses, and Chiefswood Stables and Tall Oaks Farm each bred graded stakes winning Ontario-breds.
Dom Romeo and family, which breed and race under Terra Racing,had a big year with graded stakes winner AMALFI COOAST, one of the season’s top 3-year-old fillies.
