DREAMING OF DREW easily handled her seven filly rivals in the Oct. 31 $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on Woodbine’s Tapeta surface. The 2-year-old by first crop sire Speightster (a granddson of award winning Canadian broodmare Classy ‘n Smart) from the stakes-winning mare Dreaming of Liz by El Prado (Ire) led all the way under Patrick Husbands and ran the distance in 1:44.07.
Dreaming of Drew, owned by Hoolie Racing Stable LLC and trained by Barbara Minshall, set fractions of :24 to the quarter, :48.71 to the half and 1:13.42 to three-quarters with Bodacious Miss and Justin Stein applying pressure on the final turn and Il Malocchio moving into contention from mid-pack under Sahin Civaci.
As Dreaming of Drew turned back Bodacious Miss and floated away from her foes down the stretch, Il Malocchio came through to finish second with the stalking Emmeline and Kazushi Kimura rallying to finish third over Bodacious Miss.
Dreaming of Drew concluded her five-race freshman campaign with two wins and two seconds, plus a fourth-place finish when facing Grade 1 company in the Natalma last time out.
Sent postward as the 4-5 favourite, she returned $3.90 to win.
Ontario-sired IL MALOCCHIO had a super run for Franco Meli after the Souper Speedy gal won the Victorian Queen Stakes in her last race. EMMELINE, a maiden, ran well to be third and she is a Violence filly owned by RCC Racing Stable and Realm Racing Stables.
“She’s a dream,” said Barb Minshall, who trains the promising youngster for Andrew Hudson of North Carolina, his father Greg and brother David. “She’s been a great filly for us and I’m really looking forward to the future with her.
“Hopefully, she’ll be an Oaks contender next year.”
Unsold as as a yearling for $95,000, Dreaming of Drew was bred by WinStar LLC in Ontario and is the fifth foal of Dreaming of Liz and third winner. The second dam is Grade 1 winner Silver Maiden, winner of the Frizette Stakes among other races.
Among the past Princess Elizabeth winners that have gone on to take the Woodbine Oaks are Nipissing (2012), Roan Inish (2009), Ginger Gold (2001) and Dancethruthedawn (2000).
The co-featured Overskate Stakes, worth $100,000 was also won in front running fashion as Heste Sport Inc.’s NOT SO QUIET won his second straight Ontario-sired stakes race on turf.
After an early three-way tussle for the top spot that lasted into the final turn, Not So Quiet emerged with a clear lead in the stretch to win the 7 1/2 furlong inner turf stakes race for trainer Mark Casse and jockey Rafael Hernandez. Casse and Hernandez won three races on the 11-race card.
Not So Quiet crossed to command from post seven with Eskiminzin pressing the pace through a :24.22 quarter before being joined by Red Cabernet on top in the 7-1/2-furlong sprint on the inner turf.
Those three raced past the half-mile in :48.24 and turned for home with Not So Quiet eventually drawing clear and holding off a wall of rivals including runner-up Royal Laser, the 2-1 favourite coming off back-to-back wins. Not So Quiet won the Ontario Sired Stakes event in 1:31.03 by three-quarters of a length.
Red Cabernet finished less than a length behind nosing out Dun Drum for third, while defending champion Dixie’s Gamble completed the top five finish order in his season’s debut.
Not So Quiet is by Silent Name (Jpn) – Mona Moon by Perigee Moon and was bred by Heste Sport Inc. at Norse Ridge Farm, owned by Rene and Darlene Hunderup. This is the second foal of Mona Moon who was a winner once in 8 races. Not So Quiet has 6 wins in 12 races and over $260,000 in earnings.

Owner/trainer DAVID BELL had a big day as he won two races, His brilliant quick MARTEN RIVER won for $14,000 claiming for his 7th career win in 28 races. The Silent Name gelding, bought as a yearling locally for $2,600 (US) from breeder Jennifer Leuty, has won over $214,000 (US). Bell also sent out ONE MORE DRIFT to win for $5,000 claiming and both horses were ridden by Steve Bahen who added another win with Faith Over Fear in race 2 trained by partner Rachel Halden.
US trainer Michael Trombetta sent out 2 winners and now has 8 wins at the meeting from 20 starters.
