Logan’s Peak and jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva took over from Rose and Shine heading into the far turn and galloped away from her rivals to win the $125,000 Algoma Stakes for fillies and mares, Wednesday evening at Woodbine Racetrack.
At the finish of the mile and one-sixteenth contest, Logan’s Peak, sent off at 6-1 behind the 3-5 choice Dixie Strike, had scored by a comfortable two lengths in 1:44.71. It was the third stakes win on the night for da Silva, who earlier was aboard Bear No Joke in the Kenora and Go Greeley in the Simcoe.
Finishing second was the Algoma defending champion Tee Game, with Bear’s Gem third. Meanwhile, Dixie Strike, a career earner of over $1 million, tried to rally along the rail but could only manage a fifth place finish, beaten four lengths, in a shocking result.
Trained by Nick Gonzalez for her co-owner and breeder Mary Ellen Kennedy, Logan’s Peak, a four-year-old Ontario-bred daughter of Teuflesberg-Yukon Lady, was notching her first stakes score and her fourth win in 18 career starts.
Logan’s Peak, who earned $75,000 to push her career bankroll to over $260,000, paid $14.60, $8 and $6.50, combining with Tee Game ($11.20, $8.50) for a $96.90 (7-4) exactor. A 7-4-5 (Bear’s Gem, $4.80) triactor returned $303.70 while a $1 Superfecta [7-4-5-1 (Hurricane Lorraine)] paid $1,011.90.
