The focus of the 146th Kentucky Derby has centred on two things: the effect on the world’s most famous horse race due to the  COVID-19 pandemic and the amazing colt TIZ THE LAW.

The Derby is being held Saturday Sept. 5, four months later than usual, and that has presented the racing world with an unusual race (less than the maximum 20 starters for example) but saved by the presence of a fabulous colt, TIZ THE LAW.

It is hard to imagine that the Sackatoga Stable of New York, who raced Derby winner FUNNY CIDE in 2003, has come by a colt who seems to be even better than that guy, another New York-bred too. The white-faced colt is by young sire Constitution from the Tiznow mare Tizfiz.

When Shirl’s Speight, the Woodbine based 3-year-old trained by Roger Attfield and owned by Charles Fipke, came up with a cough and was withdrawn from the Derby and Woodbine owner Bruce Lunsford’s Art Collector was also scratched, that left ENFORCEABLE as a cheering point for Woodbine fans. The colt is trained by perennial champion trainer in Canada Mark Casse who seeks his first Derby win.

Mark and his wife Tina are on their way to Kentucky from their farm in Ocala, driving north for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic essentially shut down the world.

Casse has said that Enforceable would not have been in the Derby had the race been in run in May since John Oxley’s grey colt by Tapit was not at the top of his game.

Indeed, Enforceable has been a buzz horse this week at Churchill Downs based on the impressive showings he has put on in the mornings in gallops and workouts.

Casse’s most recent Derby starter, WAR OF WILL, had some trouble in last year’s controversial race but came back to win the Preakness Stakes. The colt is headed to Woodbine for the Woodbine Mile Sept. 19.

Of course, Enforceable, and the other 16 sophomores facing Tiz the Law (King Guillermo will be scratched) are up against a colt who has only lost once in 7 races.

That loss came at Churchill Downs and the one who beat him, the one-eyed Finnick the Fierce, is in the Derby field.
