Several horses have been withdrawn from Kentucky Derby (G1) consideration, allowing some to draw in, and a few riders have already been announced.
There are less than two weeks until the 151st Derby, worth $5 million. The day before is the Kentucky Oaks for fillies and below is the current field of 14.
OWEN ALMIGHTY, FLOOD ZONE and HEART OF HONOR will not compete in the Derby and that has allowed GRANDE, FLYING MOHAWK and MADAKET ROAD to draw in to the May 3 classic.
Grande is intriguing as a Todd Pletcher trainee, lightly raced, and John Velazquez will ride. The son of Curlin is out of the stakes-winning mare Journey Home, who raced for Canada’s Sam-Son Farms. Journey Home is the dam of Canadian-bred stakes winner TICKER TAPE HOME.
Grande won his debut at 9-to-1 on January 11 at Gulfstream, won an allowance race and then was second in the Wood Memorial (G2) to Rodriguez, earning a 97 Beyer Figure according to Daily Racing Form. Grande is owned by Mike Repole.
Flying Mohawk, owned by Two Eight Racing of Major League baseball player Jayson Werth, Berry Family Racing and Shawn Kaleta’s Kaleta Racing, has never raced on the dirt, as he’s won two grass races and was recently second in the Jeff Ruby Steaks on Tapeta with an 84 Beyer Figure.
Madaket Road, by Quality Road, is one of three Bob Baffert trainees pointed to the Derby. This grey colt won a six furlong maiden race, was second in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park, and was recently a fading fourth in the Florida Derby (G1).
Top rider Irad Ortiz Jr. will ride the maiden PUBLISHER, by American Pharoah, for trainer Steve Asmussen. The bay colt, bred and co-owned by the late Brerton Jones and Gus King, was second in the Arkansas Derby to Sandman.
Below is the workout video of CITIZEN BULL (Into Mischief) from Sunday. Citizen Bull was the 2024 Champion two-year-old colt in the U.S. and he was recently fourth in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) behind Derby favourite Journalism.
