Planning for Ontario’s 2016 Thoroughbred Improvement Program (TIP) is complete, following approval of the budget and Program elements by the Board of the Ontario Racing Commission. The 2016 TIP Program will feature a full season of restricted and stakes racing as well as substantial awards for breeders and stallion owners.
With over $16 million in purses and awards available for Program participants, the Program as developed by the Thoroughbred Advisory Group continues to provide significant incentives to breed and own horses in this province thanks in part to the stability provided by the Five Year Horse Racing Partnership Plan.

All Program forms will be made available online in the “Breeding Programs” (Thoroughbred) section of the Ontario Horse Racing website at www.ontariohorseracing.ca.
Ontario Resident Mare Program Reminder
In order for a horse to be declared a Registered Ontario Bred:
a) The horse’s dam must have been declared as an Ontario Resident Mare for the birth year of the foal and meet all eligibility requirements.
b) The foal must be registered with the CTHS.
For 2016, a mare can qualify as an Ontario Resident Mare by meeting one of the five following criteria:
1. Resident in the Province of Ontario by October 1, 2015.
2. Resident in the Province of Ontario for 150 consecutive days surrounding date of foaling in Ontario.
3. Bred back to an Ontario Sire registered with the Program in 2016.
4. Purchased, or RNA (Reserve Not Attained) at a CTHS-recognized sale or auction, and arrives within the boundaries of Ontario no later than thirty (30) days after the date of purchase (or RNA at sale).
5. The mare was purchased in a bona-fide private sale, arrives in Ontario within thirty (30) days of the date of transaction and remains in Ontario until foaling.
Please note: If qualifying under numbers 1 and 2 above, it is helpful to maintain a paper trail of your mare’s residency in the event of an audit.
Stallion Registration Deadline Reminder
Stallion Registration forms must be completed and returned by January 15, 2016 for that stallion’s 2016 progeny to be eligible for Ontario Sired status (and all relevant benefits) and for the stallion to be eligible to the Stallion Awards program.
